M-F 8am to 5pm/40 hours/week Hybrid Tuesdays and Wednesdays in office. Candidates must reside within a commutable distance TCU's Corporate Headquarters in Vacaville, CA.   Summary: Travis Credit Union's (TCU) Mortgage Underwriter job family is responsible for evaluating and approving mortgage loan applications to ensure compliance with investor, regulatory, and internal guidelines. This role exists to mitigate risk, ensure loan quality, and support the credit union's lending objectives through sound underwriting practices. Underwriters play a critical role in maintaining the financial health of the organization by making informed credit decisions and ensuring loan portfolio integrity.   Profile: 

  • Underwrites Conventional 1st and 2nd mortgage loans. Verifies for completeness, accuracy and compliance.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date, sound knowledge of multiple loan product guidelines offered by the credit union, desktop underwriter/loan prospector (DU/LP) guidelines, and risk assessment tools used to decide mortgage loans.
  • Reviews and evaluates borrower(s) profiles, including but not limited, to all income documentation, tax returns, credit reports, preliminary report, judgments, bankruptcy documents and appraisals.
  • Maintains established service level standard of decisions within a 48-hour timeframe.
  • Primary underwriter for First and Second Mortgages, ensuring loans meet investor, regulatory and TCU guidelines. Underwrites all loans within established service level agreements, and reviews/approves loan conditions within established service level agreements.
  • Maintains awareness of investor guideline updates, changing economic conditions, and new trends in the insured-mortgage markets, loan products, procedures and relevant software programs.
  • Reworks loans to new terms, identifies additional conditions as needed to ensure a viable credit decision.
  • Analyzes and calculates income documentation, such as personal and business income statements and ensures all necessary documentation is requested to support final loan decisions.
  • Exercises good judgment, conducts reasonableness tests, and issues quality decisions.
  • Determines accuracy and completeness of files; ensures processes are consistent.
  • Maintains sound knowledge of secondary market activity, practices, and business/industry practices as they impact underwriting quality and origination activity.
  • Communicates collaboratively with sales team, processors, and management.
  • Assists in the preparation of audit/repurchase responses and/or rebuttal reviews.                                                                                                                                                     
Skills: 
  • Appraisal review and tax return analysis experience.
  • PC skills to include word-processing, spreadsheets and email.
  • Solid understanding of TRID- RESPA and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and decision making/problem solving skills.
  • Produces highly accurate work and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle a high-volume workload.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computers including LOS systems, DU/LP, Microsoft Office
  • and Excel.
  • Ability to adapt/learn/utilize multiple software programs. Experience with paperless
  • environment preferred.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks within strict timeframes, self-direct, use independent
  • judgment while taking acceptable levels of risk, and multi-task with proficiency.
  • Self-starter, adapt to a changing environment and the ability to communicate and work
  • well with partners and co-workers.
  • Sound understanding of credit union products and services.
  • Ability to work independently and motivated to achieve goals with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to successfully tailor communications according to the audience.
Requirements:
  • Mortgage Underwriter
    • Reports directly
    • assigned department leadership. 
    • High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or Bachelor's degree and 1 year of related experience; or equivalent related work experience.
    • FHA/VA Certification, preferred. 
  • Senior Mortgage Underwriter
    • Reports directly to assigned department leadership.
    • High School Diploma and a minimum of 5 years of related work experience; or a Bachelor's degree and 3 years of related work experience; or equivalent related work experience.
    • FHA/VA Certification, preferred.

Compensation: Base salary starting range is commensurate with experience.  

  • Mortgage Underwriter – Grade 14 Non-Exempt - $35.41/hour - $43.74/hour
  • Sr. Mortgage Underwriter – Grade 16 Non-Exempt - $42.05/hour - $51.94/hour
