Overview

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is committed to maintaining and improving Vermont's transportation infrastructure. Our newly established Structural Services Unit within the Construction Section provides specialized support on structural materials, construction practices, and continuous process improvement in bridge construction. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Civil Engineer to join our team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of engineering tasks related to bridge construction and structural materials while collaborating closely with experts in the field. 


As a Civil Engineer in the Structural Services Unit, you will have the opportunity to contribute to bridge construction engineering and structural material science. You will work directly with the Agency's Construction Structures Engineer and Concrete Materials Specialist, supporting the initiatives of the unit. This role offers valuable hands-on experience at the intersection of design, construction, and material science, while fostering continuous professional growth. This position offers a unique blend of office and fieldwork, allowing you to gain hands-on experience while contributing to vital public infrastructure.  

 

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Review concrete mix designs to assess their compliance with specifications. 
  • Evaluation of structural-related construction submittals to provide feedback on compliance and quality. 
  • Assist in constructability plan reviews and make recommendations for process improvements. 
  • Develop or review construction specifications related to bridge construction and structural materials. 
  • Provide field support or training for construction inspection staff, including project site visits and evaluations of in-service structures. 
  • Participate in concrete material testing and other lab work as needed. 
  • Liaise with concrete industry partners to review concrete mix designs, solicit feedback, and resolve specification challenges. 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to bridge construction and structural material practices.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.
OR
Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) years of experience in engineering OR licensure as an Engineer Intern.
OR
College senior in the final year of a bachelor's degree program in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field.

Preferred Qualifications

Licensure as an Engineer Intern (EIT) or the ability to obtain  
Experience, or a strong interest, in bridge design, construction, or concrete material science. 
Excellent written and oral communication skills for clear and effective reporting and collaboration. 
Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. 
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment. 
Enthusiasm for learning and growing in the engineering field. 

Special Requirements

Candidate in final year of bachelor's degree must successfully graduate prior to start date.
