SAIC is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the Restore-L program in the Satellite Servicing Projects Division (SSPD) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This position is located in Greenbelt, MD.


The Restore-L mission is a Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Satellite Servicing Project Division (SSPD) managed mission. Restore-L is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the Restore-L Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. The SSPD is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test and operations of the Restore-L Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.



JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will provide mechanical engineering support for the Restore-L.


Job duties include:

• Cross-purpose mechanical systems engineering support for a spaceflight mission through integration and test, launch, and operations of the hardware

• Proactively identifying and solving technical problems during all project life phases

• Requirements definition, verification, and management

• Design support for the Restore-L subsystem

• Act as responsible engineer for one or more pieces of key hardware in the Restore-L subsystem, following the hardware through design, manufacture, and test

• System analysis with emphasis on mission success, risk, safety and security

• Development of technical documentation including test procedures, test and status reports, procurement specifications, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and Interface Control Documents (ICDs)

• Authoring test plans and work authorization documents

• Use of engineering methodologies and techniques to perform technical trades

• Tracking hardware and associated documentation through configuration management

• Development, coordination and presentation of NASA review and Key Decision Point presentations (e.g. CDR, SRR, ORR, trade study presentations, monthly reviews, etc.)

• Ensure that the quality, accuracy, and integrity of your technical documentation, reports, and deliverables comply with NASA and Restore-L standards, project plans, and policies

• Reporting status and progress to subsystem lead and Restore-L management

• Mentoring junior engineers within the subsystem



Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or closely related field with 9+ years of related experience
• Experienced at authoring and maintaining project documentation
• Strong proficiency in resolving technical and schedule issues in order to ensure that deliverables are met on schedule
• Proficiency in advising management, inside and outside own organization, on system architecture, technical results, or risks
• Practical experience using advanced principles, theories, concepts, and techniques in solving mechanical engineering problems, with the ability to perform trade studies, develop conceptual configurations, engineer piece-parts and mechanical systems, and facilitate the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of MGSE and flight hardware
• Expertise in mechanical engineering disciplines for the design, analysis and test of tools and mechanisms, including engineering mechanics (statics and dynamics), strength of materials, structural design, machine design, structural/mechanical testing, manufacturing engineering, mechanical systems, and machine shop practices
• Firm grasp and understanding of ANSI drafting and tolerance standards
• Understanding of advanced fabrication and manufacturing methods
• Strong communication skills and ability to Interface with engineers, analysts, designers, manufacturing specialists, machine shop, flight techs, and project staff
