Job Title

Senior Counsel - AustralasiaOverview

Mastercard is seeking an experienced lawyer to be responsible for providing comprehensive, end-to-end, legal support for Mastercard payments, verification and security products and solutions in Australasia market.

Reporting directly to the Senior Managing Counsel, Australasia, the role will be based in Sydney and will be a vital part of the regional legal team which currently oversees the legal and regulatory needs of the Australasia business.

Role

• Responsible for providing guidance and hands on support for Mastercard in Australasia International Markets for the establishment, launch and/or operation of new Mastercard payments, verification and security products or solutions in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Partner with business and legal specialists elsewhere within Mastercard to support Mastercard powered products and solutions, including the attainment of any necessary regulatory authorisations.
• Serve as a trusted advisor and consider the overall benefit to the business unit or market as the highest priority when structuring legal deals and contracts.
• Autonomously structure, draft, review and negotiate sophisticated legal agreements related to business operations and activities, including identifying risk, recommending modifications and approvals of legal agreements.
• Lead communication and training to clients on legal issues, including explaining implications on business operations and legal risks.
• Communicate changes in laws and regulations, and train and educate clients on risks, legal consequences, and alternative actions, as needed.
• Partner with legal specialists and outside Counsels to coordinate research, investigate legal issues, and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
• Coach and mentor others while serving as a technical expert, often leading cross-functional strategic initiatives and sharing legal knowledge for a business and/or market.
• Represent Mastercard at external industry events, contributing to expert panels and sharing white papers and best practices, etc., to enhance the organization's brand.

All About You

• A Bachelor's degree in Law is a must with minimum 10 years of post-qualification experience in a reputable law firm and/or MNC. Post graduate study in Law or Business/Commerce will be looked on favourably
• A successful track record of managing and resolving high-risk business issues, preferably from payments or financial services industries is highly desirable
• Suitable candidates will bring prior experience in reviewing, advising and supporting regulatory authorisations in Australia from inception through to approval
• Experience providing advice on the design and implementation of ongoing compliance programs in Australia is essential and any additional experience in supporting the foregoing in New Zealand or other countries in Asia Pacific will be looked on favourably.
• Demonstrated success in building relationships and delivering results with global, multi-cultural and remote project teams.
• The ability to strike a balance between the two principal objectives of being a facilitator to the business and protecting Mastercard's interests is crucial to your success
• You have developed understanding of global best practices within one or more areas of law and compliance, through your experience working in matrixes or global organisations
• Your curiosity, ability to grasp complex new business concepts, strong commercial acumen and creative approach to problem-solving ensures you are seen as a trusted advisor who loves a challenge
• Drive an understanding of long-term business strategies and implications by overseeing the development of actionable plans for both short- and long-term next steps.
• Leverage expert understanding of regulatory environment and Mastercard's legal position to advise on sophisticated legal issues and communicate risk and/or implications of new laws.
• Demonstrate expertise in legal transactions to autonomously lead resolution of complex legal issues and cogently articulates business case for implementing proposed action steps.
• Present well-argued and comprehensive business case to obtain buy-in of stakeholders needed to execute on client opportunities and facilitate positive business outcomes.
• Act autonomously as subject matter expert or strategic legal advisor on general and/or specialty legal environment and communicates changes, risks, and legal implications to clients on highly visible and sophisticated legal matters at a senior/ executive level.
• Identify impacts to the business from emerging and high-risk legal issues and implications from research reports to inform solution development and the implementation of future-proofing strategies.
• Leverage knowledge of the competitive landscape to identify how Mastercard can better address real-time and emergent needs of end-users better than competitors.
