Scientific Technical Writer/Editor - NIH – Bethesda, MD

We are currently seeking a Scientific Technical writer/Editor with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD for a short-term temporary role.
This is a temporary 2–3-month fill-in role that would begin tentatively on or about 12/23/24.

TASKS. The contractor shall:
- Provide senior-level writing and editing support for online and print materials and publications.
- Independently and in consult with OCPL chief, coordinate, and carryout writing projects from inception to execution, including developing concepts individually or with others, coordinating project meetings with subject matter experts across the institute and externally to plan and execute final production and dissemination of writing products. Examples include, but are not limited to web pages, training program content, meeting summaries, lay-friendly articles on research advances and researcher or staff profiles, reports, and media related documents (e.g., background factsheets, contact information, etc.).
- Write and edit health and science.
Writing and editing principles, concepts and techniques, and style requirements. Experience writing about minority health, health equity and health disparities topics, particularly in the U.S. - Ability to translate complex science and health information, particularly behavioral and social science concepts, for non-scientific audiences into digestible formats for promotion and distribution across communication channels, including web, social media, video, and print.
- Ability to serve as senior editor for writing produced by others with extensive knowledge of GPO, Associated Press, and other leading style guides.
- Ability to interview leaders in biomedical/behavioral research, health care, public policy and related fields.
- Masters
- Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and deliver products within deadlines.
Ability to work well with staff, collaborate with others and represent the office and institute as applicable. - Minimum of five (5) years of science/health writing and editing
- Software - Writing Platforms and SharePoint
Advanced knowledge of and the ability to use MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PubMed, Reference Manager, and Adobe Acrobat. - Ability to research, review, analyze, interpret, validate, organize, and produce information for a variety of audiences and in various formats, including online, print and video formats.
- Advanced project management skills including understanding project life cycle, role of the project coordinator and use of tools such as work plans, task roles/responsibilities, timelines, and others to manage projects individually and working with teams including subject matter experts with knowledge of and ability to use project management tools and techniques.
- Ability to independently, and in collaboration with others, conceptualize ideas, develop strategies toward implementation, and conduct and manage tasks through execution. This skill includes the ability to problem solve.
- Knowledge of scientific information sources, research methods, publishing processes, policies, and procedures; relevant government policies, procedures, and requirements. Strong communications skills, both oral and written, with the ability to write using the plain language principles.
