Description
We are currently seeking a Facade Specialist to join our exciting team in New York! Located in the heart of midtown Manhattan next to Bryant Park, our newly renovated office has just celebrated 50 years at HOK. As a Facade Specialist, you will be responsible for advising on the design, documentation, coordination, bidding, testing and implementation of building enclosures. You will be working alongside talented architects, engineers, and designers to cultivate a culture of design excellence at the confluence of art and science, blending the power of creative expression with a clear sense of purpose.
In this role, you will have leadership responsibilities that include:
- Ensuring the overall design intent, established by the Project Designer, is incorporated into the detailed documentation of the Facade.
- Monitoring the design process from conceptual phase through construction administration, ensuring the design idea is consistent and properly executed in the Facade.
- Responsible for technical resolution and coordination for the Facade of a project.
- Working with the Specification Writer to complete project specifications for the Facade.
- Performing product research, consulting with manufacturers, and evaluating and selecting project related materials.
- Checking completed reports, plans, estimates and calculations for accuracy.
- Communicating with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements and provides support, as necessary.
- Ensuring that construction detail documentation conforms to quality assurance, quality control and best practice standards.
- Supervising the preparation of technical drawings by other less senior level architects.
- Performing as a team leader on certain projects.
- Mentoring and directing the work of less experienced staff and participating in professional development reviews.
- Maintaining positive, trusting relationships with clients.
- Communicating with client representatives to verify design requirements and specifications, progress reviews and delivery of final presentation.
- May participate in Business Development meetings with team leaders to target specified project, client, or market opportunities.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with other teams by:
- Receiving project directions from the Principal in Charge and Technical direction from the Regional Technical Principal.
- Coordinating and tracking the use of shared electronic documentation and files with project team, clients, and consultants.
- Communicating with consultants and vendors to issue changes and track resolutions.
- Providing technical support and project communications to the team.
- Attending on-site visits, field reviews, field testing, mockups, and project meetings.
- Preparing and coordinating the review of contractors' schedules, submission of shop drawings and samples.
- Being involved in specification set-up and drawing coordination, research, and appropriate use of HOK Standards.
- Providing support to all team members for specific market, discipline, and other areas of expertise.
- Participating in the review of building enclosure costs, budgets and adhering to schedule.
- Incorporating Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
- Strong knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, material application, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness regarding Facades.
- Advanced knowledge of:
- Enclosure building systems.
- Sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
- buildingSMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IDP).
- QA/QC process.
- Building codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents.
- Construction Administration processes
- Hand and advanced CAD drafting skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and 3D Modeling software, Rhino preferred.
- Proficiency in Revit required.
- Special knowledge in an area such as Thermal Simulation, Structural Design, Daylighting, Energy Codes, LEED requirements and related regulations, and LCA software required.
- Bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering required.
- Master's degree in architecture or engineering preferred.
- 7-10 plus years' experience preferred with focused Façade experience for 5 years plus preferred.
- Registered Architect with current license required.
- NCARB registration preferred.
- LEED credential required within 6 months of employment.
Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education and location. The reasonably expected range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000. Other compensation may include a discretionary bonus.
