The Highlights: Reporting to the Assistant Director of Veteran Affairs, the Veteran Certifying Assistant will help certify all veterans' benefits at DePaul University. This will be roughly 450 students a quarter (600 students annually). The certifying assistant will be trained to be up to date on certification regulations with the Veterans Administration (VA) and perform administrative functions for the Veterans Benefits Coordinator and the Assistant Director.

What You'll Do:

  • Prepare certifications weekly for Veteran Benefits Coordinator to review and submit to the VA by ensure that documents being submitted to the Office of Veterans Affairs has been received & keeping up on weekly enrollment changes that must be reported to the Veterans Administration in a timely manner.
  • Assist with payment processing by entering deposits from the VA to a shared spreadsheet with the financial aid office for disbursement by organizing, maintaining, and tracking VA deposits. 
  • Ensure that all certifications created in the VA system (VAONCE) has been submitted correctly for compliance and auditing purposes via scanning, filing and completing required administrative tasks.
  • Reconcile benefits received on a quarterly basis. 
  • Assists the Assistant Director with all GI Bill benefits monies, approximately $9 million annually.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's Degree OR Associate Degree (or 2 college years completed) with 2 years relevant experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with veteran educational benefits required. 
  • Veterans educational benefit certification experience preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel required.
  • Experience with Federal VA Enrollment Manager (formerly VA Once) Web interface preferred.
  • Must have solid understanding of VA educational benefits programs.
  • Must have solid understanding of federal financial aid regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
  • Must have strong attention to detail as this job has federal regulations that have to be met for compliance and auditing purposes.
  • Effective communication and professionalism with students, faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Must be ready for a data entry position (roughly 90% of the job)
  • Ability to handle basic budgetary needs on a larger scale.
  • Prior School Certifying Official (SCO) experience preferred.
The anticipated hourly hiring range for this position is: $20.93 - $26.95 per hour.  The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
