The Highlights: Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager guides and performs advanced level accounting and audit work related to the financial operations of the university.  The manager oversees the Financial Accounting department, from a general operations and strategic direction standpoint, ensuring the needs of university wide stakeholders are being met in an effective and efficient manner.  The manager supervises a staff of 5 to 7 individuals who are responsible for reconciliations, analyses, reporting, and daily data processing and monitoring. The manager ensures that the accounts that are assigned to their area are being reconciled in an accurate and timely fashion, staff is cross trained, processes are documented, and systems are functioning and effective.   The manager works with various departments throughout the university in determining, implementing or modifying processes to ensure compliance with GAAP, university policies, applicable tax regulations, and other various external requirements.  The manager is also responsible for activities related to month and year end closes, including administrating internal and external audits and the preparation of the university's financial statements and footnotes. 
 

What You'll Do:

  • General supervision of Financial Accounting operations, including, but not limited to: resource management/allocation, staff development, ensuring monthly and quarterly deadlines are being met, ensuring teams remain engaged and efficient, and ensuring that staff are working collaboratively with their counterparts throughout Financial Affairs and the EVP Office. This also includes being a direct resource, reference point and subject matter expert, for all Financial Accounting staff. This specifically involves overseeing the efficient and effective reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, as well as variance analysis of all general ledger accounts. 
  • Overseeing and managing close (quarterly, monthly, annually) and multiple Audits: With direct support from Lead and Senior Accountants, and direction from the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing period close and associated reporting and audit requirements. This includes quarterly reporting and other internal reporting requirements, such as preparation and review of Management and Board of Trustee reporting. The manager is also responsible for management of external reporting activities, including but not limited to: Financial Statement Audit, 403(b) audit, NCAA Agreed Upon Procedures, etc. The manager will provide expertise and ensures compliance with GAAP, university policies, applicable tax regulations, and other various external requirements. 
  • Business process development & documentation: Working with the Assistant Controller, Controller, and other departments in Financial Affairs and the Office of the EVP, to develop new business processes to help improve operations from an end user perspective. 
  • Coordinate collaboration with other Financial Affairs departments: This includes collaborating with teams during quarterly and fiscal year end close to ensure all university departments are operating in compliance with GAAP and university policy. 
  • General relationship management and customer service: The manager will be the main point of contact for all issues related to Financial Statements, the general ledger, and accounting entries. This will require liaising with Financial Services, as well as working directly with stakeholders throughout the university to problem solve and trouble shoot. 
  • The position supervises 5 to 7 full time employees. This includes daily supervision and guidance, hire/fire, work prioritization, performance reviews, and providing input to the Assistant Controller and Controller on strategic direction for the group.
  • Supervisory duties comprise about 50% of the position's responsibilities.
  • The Accounting Manager is responsible for reviewing and supervising the team's work on reconciliations and accounts totaling approximately $2 billion in assets and $2 billion in liabilities/fund balances. This position exerts influence over many key aspects of internal control.


 

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, or related business Bachelor degree, required.
  • Minimum 6 years experience in Accounting or Audit required.
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience required.
  • Consulting, public accounting, higher education, or internal accounting management experience strongly required.
  • Oracle General Ledger or other ERP Ledger experience required.
  • CPA or Advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivated individual able to work in changing environment;
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of constituents at a variety of levels throughout the University, and the ability to work independently as well as manage others;
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented in order to track, manage, and resolve multiple open issues in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner required;
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate with clarity, tact, and courtesy, and demonstrate judgment and discretion in the sharing of sensitive information required; 
  • Individual who is resourceful, flexible, and able to anticipate and resolve problems effectively and has a capacity for understanding the relationship of specific tasks to the broader operations and administrative functions required;
  • Proven outstanding analytical and problem solving skills required.
  • Employment may be contingent on successful criminal and financial background checks.
  The anticipated yearly hiring range for this position is: $85,519.00 to $110,00.00.  The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
