Position Summary
The Geography Program at Bellevue College is seeking applications for adjunct faculty interested in teaching ¿Introduction to GIS¿ courses on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will serve as the lead faculty member for an introductory level GIS course. Depending upon enrollment demand and feedback, the adjunct faculty instructor would be considered to teach up to four GIS courses per academic year. Courses are typically offered as hybrid on-campus Monday-Thursday for 50 minutes per session or twice a week for 110 minutes per session. Courses are usually offered on weekdays at a designated time between the hours of 8:30am and 1:20pm. Teaching on-campus is preferred, GIS instructors can teach online from time to time.
The position will begin in Fall 2025 OR Winter 2026, depending upon enrollment demand.
Pay, Benefits & Work ScheduleAdjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.
This is a non-instructional assignment which includes GIS lab classes with compensation $42.52- $52.21
Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement which is $42.52/hour. Hired applicant may receive additional compensation in the form of stipends for additional assignments or participation in certain projects.

Part-time faculty with 50% or more load is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the DepartmentThe Geography Department at Bellevue College values student-centered teaching and learning. We serve a diverse student body, offering first-year and second-year level courses in Geography. Included in the Geography department's many courses are Introduction to Geography, World Regional Geography, the Violent Face of Nature, Geography of World Affairs, Introduction to Globalization, Cultural and Human Geography, Geography of Weather and Climate Change and Introduction to Mapping and Geographic Information Systems. These courses are offered in multiple teaching modalities, including online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes. In addition, we encourage our faculty to develop new curriculum that serves our diverse student population. Essential Functions- Be available to teach on campus (most of the time) and sometimes online, as required by program needs, course schedules, and enrollment demands. Some classes meet daily, while others meet twice per week. As assigned by the chair, some classes meet daily, while others meet twice per week. Some courses meet Monday through Thursday for 50 minutes, while others meet twice per week for either 50 minutes or 1 hour and 50 minutes.
- Be available to students outside of class periodically to engage students in active learning and provide students with timely feedback about their work.
- Work with peers to maintain high standards of course content and adhere to program policies, student success efforts, and assessment practices.
- Master degree in GIS, geography, or in a related field with significant geography coursework.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Ability to relate to students and staff of varied ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, and abilities, along with a commitment to a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
- Ability and willingness to adapt to changing teaching schedules and situations.
- Two (2) years of experience in GIS, or similar field.
- Documented successful teaching experience in Geography, GIS or related field.
- Documented ability to effectively teach in traditional, hybrid and fully online modalities.
- Knowledge of current curriculum, teaching, and assessment practices in higher education.
- Ability and willingness to employ continuous improvement in curriculum, teaching, and assessment.
- Willingness to participate in college initiatives/governance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
