Overview

JOB DESCRIPTION:The Hematology Oncology Pharmacy (Inpatient/Outpatient)/Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy technician supports the strategic goals of the medical center by providing pharmacy services for the inpatient/outpatient pharmacy and clinical research groups. This position is an integral member of the team and the responsibilities include:

  • Managing clinical investigational drug inventory
  • Providing technical direction and assistance with clinical trial protocols
  • Performing drug distribution activities
  • Maintaining information and assisting in the record keeping related to clinical trials required by the study protocols
  • Preparing non-sterile and sterile intravenous including hazardous drugs in accordance with established procedures 
  • Maintaining the clinical investigational work areas in a clean and orderly manner
  • Workload measurement support functions
  • Provide training/educational functions for learners and new hires
  • Assist with other areas and responsibilities consistent with the job classification
  • Assist with several administrative functions to support the IDS service line

The technician may use IV robotics and/or guided preparation technology to compound hazardous medications. The pharmacy takes many steps to reduce potential exposure to hazardous medications through environmental control, use of personal protection equipment, and use of a closed system transfer device (Phaseal). The technician will be expected to follow procedures to limit employee, guest, and their own risk of exposure.

Maintains updated knowledge and skills and contributes to the education of others. Provides age appropriate care in accordance with Age Specific Care Guidelines. Attends periodic area meetings. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. Will be expected to uphold the hospital's five key values, participate in quality and process improvement activities of the Department of Pharmacy.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • PTCB technician certification (CPhT) required within 180 days.
  • Completion of a formal technician-training program and/or associate's degree in Healthcare or Pharmacy Technology preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Sterile compounding, hazardous drug preparation and IV experience strongly preferred.  

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:  

  • PTCB technician certification (CPhT) preferred.  
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration required within 30 days of employment and PTCB/NHA technician certification (CPhT) within 180 days of employment or actively enrolled in an ACPE accredited Pharmacy School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1.  Assists the pharmacist in preparing and processing medication orders/prescriptions to ensure that patients and departments receive medications when needed and are accurately charged for services.
  2. Works cooperatively with others and organizes daily workflow to optimize output.
  3. Assists with stock maintenance to ensure that quality in-date drug products and supplies are available when needed.
  4. Provides pharmacy service to the patient care areas.
  5. Participates in the team approach to quality improvement to support the Pharmacy Department's commitment to the philosophy and principles of Total Quality.
  6. Maintains updated knowledge and skills and contributes to the education of others.
  7. Participates in planning processes by establishing personal goals to support quality improvement efforts and contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives.
  8. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
  9.  Provides age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with Age Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong emphasis on basic math skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to talk with patients/caregivers and others to obtain and provide information in a professional manner.
  • Solid typing and computer skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Excellent attendance and performance records required.  
  • Must enjoy tasks requiring keen attention to detail. 
  • Must perform the technical duties required quickly and efficiently and be able to cope with stat situations. 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written) are required. 
  • Must be cooperative and a good listener. 
  • Must be committed to excellent customer service.
