Working Hours: 36 hours a week (72 hours per pay period) **NO holiday or weekend rotation Shift:  First Shift  - working hours are subject to change Position Reports to: Lab Department Manager      SUMMARY:  To operate and supervise a technical section in the performance of all its functions, reporting to the laboratory manager or the medical director.  The section head fulfills the qualifications and responsibilities of technical supervisor and general supervisor and also performs routine duties of a medical technologist.   REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:   Organize, supervise, and maintain a technical section ‑ its equipment, work area, procedures, and records.   Supervise, train, and evaluate laboratory personnel working in the section.   Perform all general or specialized patient or test procedures.   Monitor, interpret, assess, and maintain documentation of maintenance, calibration, verification, quality control, proficiency testing, patient testing and quality improvement system data.   Recognize, investigate and solve technical, operational, and equipment problems, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing.   Evaluate information and maintain current knowledge of technical literature and innovations for current improvements and for planning purposes.   Select best-value methods, equipment, and materials, maintain supply of the section while controlling costs and quality.   Must be able to interact with and perform standard specimen collection procedures effectively on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients, understand and react effectively to their individual and unique needs.   Special duties as required.   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Scientist or related science or clinical discipline and completion of accredited technologist program and at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both in high complexity testing within the respective specialty or a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science.  Registered or registry eligible by ASCP and if registry eligible at time of hire must pass exam within 18 months of hire date to remain employed.  Must complete the Bachelor of Science Medical Laboratory Science program within 3 years.   The section head fulfills the qualifications and responsibilities of technical supervisor or general supervisor depending upon level of education.   The employee must successfully complete an orientation checklist and satisfactory performance assessment within 3 months of hire date.   The employee is required to be neat and personable, able to work diplomatically with patients, visitors, physicians and their office personnel, business representatives, and other hospital employees.      Weekend, holiday, and occasional overtime work is required, as well as coverage of all schedules and shifts where necessary.  Must be able to respond to emergency situations during off-hours, such as equipment breakdown.  Dependability for attendance is necessary.   Physical demands are those that must be met to completely fulfill the described duties. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform those functions.   Manual dexterity, organization, ability to work without direct supervision, and dependability for accuracy are essential.  The employee may perform/assist with painful clinical work and/or handling of biological materials.  Considerable mental effort required; must have ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure of time and distraction, occasionally with long hours.    The employee must be able to handle an average amount of walking, standing, and bending, and must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. The employee must possess adequate vision and hearing to safely perform their job functions.  The employee must have the hearing abilities to communicate with patients to assure accuracy and patient safety, to easily hear auditory alarms and be able to communicate with coworkers and outside professionals.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.   The work environment is that encountered while performing the essential duties described.  The noise level is moderately high.
