Description

This Research Assistant I will provide technical assistance for various research projects and conducts research activities according to research protocol. This is technical Neurobiology laboratory support work with scientific research projects in a laboratory setting. Work involves providing support for, and contributing to, NIH-funded research projects by completing experiments related to drug discovery for pain as well as maintaining inventory supplies, overseeing lab cleanliness, maintaining animal colony, conducting tests and experiments, and assisting with collecting and recording data for research and experimental purposes.
Work primarily makes use of neurobiological, physiological, and molecular techniques including but not limited to calcium imaging, multi-electrode array recording, cell culturing, fluorescence microscopy, electrophysiology, and mouse behavior (pain). Experience with these techniques is an asset. Assignments and work evaluation will be received from the professor/grant administrator (Principal Investigator), Dr. Benedict Kolber (www.kolberlab.com).
Additional guidance is provided through university regulations for environmental safety. Supervision and monitoring may be exercised over students and staff working in the laboratory.
*This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week between the hours of 8AM-5PM Mon.-Fri.
*This position is in whole or in part grant-funded. Continued employment is contingent on the availability of funds.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience in customer service or in daily interactions in a public services environment.



Preferred Education and Experience

PREFERRED:
  • Bachelor's degree in the particular field of study (i.e. neurobiology or neuroscience) and previous related experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the essential job functions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conducts experiments (see sample of techniques listed above) and records finding under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Collects data for research and experimental purposes following established research procedures.
  • Assists in statistical and comparative analysis of experimental data including use of appropriate computer software applications.
  • Monitors supplies and submits requisitions in keeping with budgetary guidelines.
  • Prepares experimental reagents and solutions to supervisor specifications.
  • Helps maintain transgenic animal colony including daily care and genotyping of mice.
  • Reports findings by assisting in the development of written reports.
  • May conduct literature searches related to the research project.
  • Helps with cleaning of lab area.
  • May train and/or supervise student aides and other trainees working in the laboratory.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to follow experimental procedures and to report results accurately.
  • Ability to keep inventory of materials and equipment, requisition supplies, and maintain purchasing documentation.
  • Ability to use laboratory materials and equipment properly so as to assure validity of results and preserve a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Knowledge of computer applications used to record, analyze, and report findings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students.

Travel:
This position may be subject to occasional travel for conferences or for training and/or research needs.
