Description

The Director of Economic Development will be responsible for leading UT Dallas' economic development initiatives aimed at maximizing the University's role as an Economic Engine for the Region, and will support the vision setting, operations and strategic planning for university-wide economic development practices, programs and policies. The director will also serve as a liaison for internal Sustainability initiatives with University entities.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related progressive experience.

10 years of experience in economic development and/or environmental science. Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Marketing, Real Estate, Economic Development, Geology, Environmental Science, or related field. Master's Degree preferred. CEcD preferred. 5 years of supervisory experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Economic Development:
1. Develop UT Dallas Economic Development Work Plan to ensure the University's ability to serve as a neutral convener for economic development initiatives. Lead economic development department staff and activities.

2. Lead business recruitment and retention efforts for the Dallas-Fort Worth Region on behalf of UT Dallas. Represent UT Dallas at regional economic development site visits and industry recruitment events.

3. Develop relationships with regional economic development stakeholders, industry leaders and workforce/educational partners to help advance the North Texas region's economic development goals. Regularly meet with partners to maximize UT Dallas' influence in local economic development activities.

4. Connect local industry with UT Dallas research faculty to recruit industry-sponsored research projects and other industry engagement. Maintain a database of local industry to routinely match with research faculty. Set up and host meetings between faculty and industry to build leads. Cultivate relationships with potential industry-sponsored research prospects.

5. Represent UT Dallas at regional economic development and workforce development events. Give presentations about UT Dallas and its role as an economic engine for the region.

6. Plan and execute annual UT Dallas Economic Development Summit engaging local industry leaders, economic development practitioners and UT Dallas leadership.

7. Manage relations with the Economic Development Advisory Committee. Engage regularly with members, seek feedback, plan and host biannual committee meetings, and recruit new members as necessary.

8. Manage economic development data requests and funnel them through the Economic Development Analyst.

9. Supervise Economic Development Analyst and other economic development staff. Oversee the direction of and recommend content for “The Connection” monthly articles, Labor Market reports, and economic development data products.

10. Develop and maintain relationships with the local commercial real estate community.

12. Under direction of Vice President for Facilities and Economic Development, assess opportunities for UT Dallas-owned land and help develop strategy to develop remaining acres north of campus.

13. Manage economic development impact study projects with external economic research firms.

14. Assist with coordination, organization and staffing of Office of Facilities and Economic Development functions and events as needed.

15. Represent UT Dallas at national economic development organizations such as the University Economic Development Association (UEDA) and the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Sustainability:

1. Partner with the Facilities management sustainability team to enhance the implementation of various sustainability initiatives across campus, engaging students, faculty and staff.

2. Provide leadership and serve as a catalyst for initiatives, project and program development, and influence stakeholder groups to cultivate a culture of sustainability within the university.

3. Represent UT Dallas in regional sustainability programs such as RCE North Texas.

4. Support and align the University with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

5. Work with the Facilities management sustainability team to Implement energy conservation measures in new and existing buildings as well as sustainability efforts to ensure efficient campus operations.
