Department Overview
At the California Digital Library (CDL), we believe that the library, in all its forms, enables and advances the critical work of students, scholars and the public. As a University of California systemwide library, CDL provides services to and on behalf of the UC system as a partner and collaborator to the ten UC campus libraries. As a globally connected digital library, CDL occupies a unique position between the local UC campuses and the global digital library infrastructure. The user base for CDL services and programs includes UC faculty, students, and library staff; the patrons of the consortia in which the UC Libraries participate; and the many people worldwide who benefit from UC's open access offerings. The California Digital Library has four core programs: Shared Collections; Discovery & Delivery; Publishing, Archives, and Digitization; and the UC Curation Center (UC3). 

The CDL is a unit within the Academic Affairs division of the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 75+ and is located in downtown Oakland. 

Position Summary
Reporting to CDL's Discovery and Delivery Associate Director, the Senior Product Manager - Metadata Services, oversees the management and ongoing development of a portfolio of metadata ingest and analytical tools, primarily the Zephir product, utilized by HathiTrust repository contributors nationwide. The Senior Product Manager - Metadata Services is a member of a team of four, including a metadata analyst and two developers, responsible for resolving a wide range of complex issues and working cooperatively with national stakeholders, including metadata contributors, development partners, and service users. 

The Senior Product Manager possesses deep expertise in metadata and information technology, is responsive to the needs of HathiTrust contributors and users and works to facilitate collaborative partnerships with the goal of advancing initiatives, evaluating service opportunities, assessing user needs, and expanding product functionality. The incumbent will assume a key role in promoting partnerships between CDL and organizations working toward national metadata standards. The Senior Product Manager position operates within a rapidly evolving academic library environment, requiring an exceptional degree of organization, professionalism, collaboration, and problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

35% Portfolio management: Manages the maintenance and ongoing development of a portfolio of metadata ingest and analytical tools, primarily the Zephir product, utilized by HathiTrust repository contributors nationwide. Identifies emerging market trends and leads the identification of additional opportunities for value added services. Participates in the development of the organization's long-range strategic metadata service and product plans. Ensures that a broad range of staff and stakeholders are invoked, engaged, and contribute to metadata service initiatives. 

 

25% Project management: Utilizes advanced project management techniques that support decision-making across multiple stakeholders, resulting in widespread partnership, accountability, and commitment. Using Agile and Scrum methodologies, leads product development initiatives and ongoing maintenance projects, in collaboration with CDL and HathiTrust staff. Develops project plans, including goals, deliverables, resource allocation, and timelines, for projects and products of significant size and complexity. 

 

25% Collaboration and consultation: Promotes innovation, best practices, and collaboration as a lead participant in multiple national and UC stakeholder groups. Collaboratively develops, modifies, and executes policies and projects related to metadata services and processes. Acts as a product liaison across the organization, to external agencies, and to other stakeholders to ensure effective production, delivery, and operation of services and enhancements. 

 

15% Strategic communications and relations: Oversees effective and timely communication related to metadata initiatives, including the HathiTrust and Zephir services, to collaborative partners, stakeholders, and the UC campus libraries. Prepares committee, project, and other presentations and reports. Coordinates the production of relevant data and analysis. Utilizes extensive knowledge of Zephir and HathiTrust to provide representation on external panels, committees, and meetings. Ensures the preparation and maintenance of documentation including end-user documentation and release notes. 


Experience
Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with the management and development of metadata ingest and analytical tools, preferably within the academic library environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in product or service development and management, including strategic planning and implementation, partnership building, vendor management, and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of product/service development concepts, practices, standards, and processes as practiced in academic libraries or similar institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, build consensus, and promote the exchange of information within and among project teams and internal and external constituencies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in understanding current, evolving, and legacy metadata content standards, formats, and frameworks; proficiency in resource description data models used in the context of library metadata and linked data applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with extraction and ingest of metadata. 
  • Proven ability to identify key issues critical to the organization's long-range success of a desired product or service. 
  • Proven ability to research, collect and analyze information to use in determining product options or alternatives. 
  • Advanced organization and project management skills to lead large or multiple cross-functional teams. 
  • Advanced oral communication skills to effectively present, negotiate, convey and explain information. 
  • Advanced written communications skills to draft clear, concise documentation, reports and specifications. 


Education
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in information science or related subject, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in information science or related subject.

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
