Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: 

EHS SPEC 3: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000 to $92,000/year.

EHS SPEC 2: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $38.31/hr.-$41.59/hr. 

 

Full Salary or Hourly Range: 

EHS SPEC 3: The full salary range for this position is $74,300/yr. to $134,500/yr. 

EHS SPEC 2: The full hourly range for this position is $32.18/hr. to $57.28/hr. 

Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the direction of the Industrial Safety Program Manager, develops, implements, manages, provides support, and identifies needs for a diverse set of occupational health and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and help ensure a safe workplace. Additional areas of responsibility include performing job hazard and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments, developing and providing training and technical information, performing audits and compliance inspections, generating reports and corrective action notifications, providing injury prevention program assistance, implementing injury prevention strategies, and monitoring injury trends on campus. Obtains and maintains certifications necessary for program implementation and oversight.

 

Qualifications for EHS SPEC 3:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1-3 years Developing, implementing, and/or managing safety programs.
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge and understanding of all EH&S fields including but not limited to: industrial hygiene, environmental health, pest control, occupational safety, ergonomics, laboratory safety, biosafety, controlled substances, environmental protection, fire safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials control and hazardous waste management.
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines to inspections, investigations, process improvements, procedural documentation, and complaint resolution
  • Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively with organizations and experts within relevant fields, liaise with regulatory agencies, and train within a diverse environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints
  • Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment to sample, monitor, compile, analyze, and report findings
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within 90 Days
  • 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training on an annual basis

 

Preferred:

  • Professional certifications preferred

 

Qualifications for EHS SPEC 2:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
  • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required

 

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing to work with and respond to emergencies (on and off-hours) involving potentially hazardous materials.
  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal history background check

Job Functions and Percentages of Time for EHS SPEC 3:

  • 95% Safety Program Management - Develops, implements, manages, provides support, and identifies needs for a diverse set of campus-wide occupational health and safety programs, including but not limit to: Confined Space, Shop Safety, Lock-out/Tag-out, Powered Industrial Trucks/Heavy Equipment, Crane/Hoist Safety, Fall Protection, Theater & Performance Safety, Ladder & Scaffolding Safety, Aerial Lifts, and Trenching & Shoring Safety. Authors and maintains program materials and records to meet or exceed applicable regulatory requirements and industry best practices. Communicates program requirements to campus entities, and helps ensure compliance. Performs risk assessments, job hazard assessments, safety audits, and inspections. Reviews work practices and recommends controls. Generates reports and follows up on corrective actions. Researches, develops and presents training, certification, and other instructional materials and resources for program compliance.
  • 5% Emergency Response Team - Serves on the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Emergency Response Team (ERT). Actively participates in the scheduled ERT training sessions. Provides technical guidance during campus emergency incidents. Prepared to act independently as a First Responder during or after-hours to evaluate, prioritize and coordinate EH&S' response to hazardous materials incidents. Interacts with the Fire Department during emergencies. If needed, submits emergency notifications to State and local agencies (CUPA, EPA and OES). As a member of the ERT performs a variety of administrative and operational tasks as needed during a campus wide and/or regional incident (e.g. earthquake, fire, flood, pandemic). Duties may include but are not limited to preparation and/or review of documents, ordering, tracking, delivery and distribution of materials and other duties as assigned by the Campus Emergency Operations Center (EOC)/EHS.
