Departmental Overview

The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is a hub for research, training and innovation headquartered at the University of California, Berkeley. We generate insights that decision-makers can use to improve policies, programs, and people's lives. Our best-in-class academic network includes nearly 200 faculty, 70 scholars from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)—primarily from East Africa, and hundreds of graduate students from diverse academic disciplines who produce rigorous evidence about what works to expand education, health, and economic opportunities for people living in poverty. Our business model involves curating policy-relevant research agendas in collaboration with development leaders, overseeing competitive grant-making to answer critical questions, investing in research capacity, and strategically connecting research and ideas to inform decision-making by governments, NGOs, and the private sector.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Program Manager for Global Networks, the Associate will support a wide range of activities related to CEGA's Global Networks portfolio. The Associate will work closely with the Special Projects Associate, as well as other teams at CEGA as appropriate. The Associate will also frequently collaborate with our growing network of scholars in East and West Africa. The position requires high attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently, flexibly, and effectively under tight deadlines and with diverse stakeholders.

Coordination (25%)

  • Coordinate fellowships for African scholars at UC Berkeley—including logistics (booking travel and accommodations, arranging visas), and communications.
  • Support fellows by coordinating seminars, arranging meetings with faculty, assisting with logistics for campus visits, and arranging housing/activities.

Events (20%)

  • Provide logistical support for program-related conferences, trainings, seminars, and workshops (including the annual Africa Evidence Summit), working with the CEGA Events Associate and in-country partners as needed. This includes organizing planning meetings, arranging complex and detailed travel plans, itineraries, agendas, reimbursement requests, and likely traveling internationally.
  • Develop event content, recruiting and liaising with speakers and participants, scoping venues, organizing catering, booking travel, and coordinating day-of logistics.
    Coordinates implementation with cross-organizational departments or external entities as needed.

Communication (10%)

  •  Support the dissemination of funded research, including drafting content for the CEGA website, blog posts, newsletters, and social media.

Research Projects (10%)

  • Circulate requests for proposals (RFPs) for research projects and inclusion efforts, coordinate peer review, and issue award letters. Manage research awarding process and ongoing research to ensure that funded projects carried out in LMICs are implemented effectively, efficiently, and ethically.
  • Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization or initiative.

Various Participation (10%)

  • Participates on policy and planning committees and working groups. Participate in CEGA-wide activities, including internal working groups, performance management processes, and ongoing process documentation. Proactively engage in professional development opportunities according to your areas of interest and alignment with programmatic goals.

Project Management and subawards (10%)

  • Work with CEGA's Operations team to set up subaward contracts, monitor progress, coordinate payments/invoicing, work with teams to extend or amend contracts as needed, track disbursements, and collect grantee reports and budgets. Coordinate with LMIC Partners (such as the Network of Impact Evaluation Researchers in Africa and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration) to ensure operational excellence of programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Strong policy analysis techniques.
  • 1-3 years experience working for a non-profit or academic research institution, experience with project implementation and monitoring and evaluation. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Development Studies, Economics, Global Health, Public Policy, Political Science, International Affairs, Public Health or related discipline. and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Commitment to scientific, evidence-led international development policy and capacity strengthening in LMICs.
     

Preferred Qualifications
  • Capacity to manage work independently, multitask and be responsive to tight deadlines;
  • Self-directed and intrinsically motivated, with strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-anticipation and -solving, and customer service;
  • Strong attention to detail, and positive attitude in approaching challenges and uncertainty.
  • Experience with grants management, financial tracking, event planning;
  • Experience with databases and data management is preferred; Salesforce or other customer or donor database experience is a plus;
  • Familiarity with major problems and solutions to global poverty; as well as rigorous impact evaluation research methods;
  • Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work diplomatically and flexibly with diverse partners;
  • Experience living and working in an LMIC

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100 - $79,007

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), 1 year contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
