Position Summary:

The Institute for Genomics & Bioinformatics (IGB) is currently led by Director Pierre Baldi and Associate Director Xiaohui Xie, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. First and foremost, the primary mission of the IGB is to foster innovative basic and applied research at the intersection of the life and computational sciences and members of the IGB community are vigorously engaged in collaborative and ground-breaking research. In addition, the IGB is engaged in educating the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as in entrepreneurial activities to develop and transition research technologies to widespread and practical application. The Institute periodically participates in programs aimed at bringing new bioinformatics faculty to the campus under IGB's stewardship. Finally, the IGB is engaged in multiple outreach and diversity-promoting activities and periodically organized conferences, symposia, workshops and other events for the UCI and the broader community.   Reporting to IGB Director, Pierre Baldi, incumbent is responsible for oversight of all administrative operations of the Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics, an interdisciplinary Organized Research Unit with an annual budget of $5M and annual expenses of $2.5M. Incumbent will be responsible for budgetary and financial management of federal and private contract and grants, subawards, gifts, unrestricted funds, student fees and IGB's annual operating budget. Incumbent will perform short-and long-term planning and projections of financial resources for IGB faculty. Duties also include pre-award proposal submissions, preparing grant budgets, preparing proposal administrative sections such as biosketches, resources page and other support pages, post award contract and grants management, preparing grant renewals, and financial reports for sponsoring agencies and donors, procurement and facilities management activities, academic and staff HR functions, and contributing to organizational website content. May be expected to train and supervise support staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions while ensuring safety protocols and UC policies are followed. This is a hybrid position and is expected to be on-site at least 3 days per week.

$73,900.00 - $133,700.00 (Annual Salary)


Required:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a university environment
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management. 
  • Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines. 
  • Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. 
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service. 
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. 
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.

 

Preferred:  
  • Experience with contracts and grants (C&G) proposal submission and C&G management.

Special Conditions Required:

 

  • May be occasionally asked to work evenings or weekends for Institute events.
