Full Hourly Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full hourly range for this position is $27.88 - $41.19/hr.  The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.88 - $29.89/hr.

Working Days and Hours: Monday-Friday, 10am - 7pm

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general direction of the Makerspace Manager, the Makerspace Assistant plays a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the UCSB Makerspace, located inside the UCSB Library. The Makerspace is a new program that provides UCSB students, faculty, and staff with access to high-quality fabrication tools, in depth instruction, and peer support on rapid prototyping and iterative design processes. This position holds primary responsibility for the supervision of student assistants who staff the Makerspace during all hours of operations, ensuring a high level of customer service. The Makerspace Assistant develops training materials and leads workshops for novice and experienced users interested in making. The Makerspace Assistant maintains a safe, organized, and welcoming space, and proactively tracks and orders supplies. The Assistant will help in the evaluation and evolving development of the Makerspace for the UCSB community.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • 1-3 years of experience in customer service and/or office administration.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • High degree of computer literacy and comfort in the digital environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, science, art/design, computer science, technology, or a related field.
  • Working within a Makerspace or similar environment.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Student Workforce Supervision (40%) - Manage the direct supervision, hiring, training, discipline, and evaluation of a team of approximately 10 student assistants. Conduct initial orientation, onboarding, and arrange for training of all student workers. Assign projects and tasks to help student assistants continually develop relevant skills. Coordinate scheduling to ensure service coverage during all hours of operation, including nights and weekends. Verify, correct, and approve bi-weekly electronic time cards through Kronos Workforce Management System. Provide quality control of customer service operations.

Training and Documentation (20%) - Develop working knowledge of Makerspace equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutter, sewing machines, electronics, and other crafting tools. Assist Makerspace Manager to develop programming in the form of events, workshops, and trainings; lead workshop sessions; train student assistants to lead workshops. Train student workers on how to assist users; document frequently asked questions with guidelines for how to troubleshoot issues or requests; consult with users in the event of more advanced requests that cannot be resolved by student assistants. Create training materials and documentation for Makerspace users in various formats, including service procedures, equipment training, safety protocols, and best practices. Utilize a wide range of technologies to create and distribute training materials in the Makerspace course in the Canvas learning management system and other platforms. Includes workshop lesson plans, presentation slides, and physical artifacts that demonstrate the capabilities of our equipment.

Managing Space, equipment, and supplies (15%) - Purchase and inventory consumables and other Makerspace supplies through the Gateway procurement system to ensure continuity in our available supplies; ensure that all items are received in a timely and working condition. Maintain the overall wellbeing of the space, troubleshoot equipment errors, or contact vendors for in-depth maintenance as needed. Submit tickets and report issues with the respective campus groups including Letters and Science IT, Library HR, or Library Building Operations. Responsible for updating and maintaining Makerspace forms, signs, and handouts. Make suggestions for storage, organization, and future equipment needs.

Marketing and Outreach (15%) - Assist in creating content for Makerspace marketing, including written material and photos for our e-newsletter. Collaborate with Library communications team to utilize the website, social media, and other communications platforms to promote the space and services to diverse members of the university community.

Safety and Administration (10%) - Support the Makerspace Manager with administrative tasks, including conducting online research, contacting vendors and other partners, drafting documents and reports, and taking meeting minutes. Act as Department Safety Representative; during evacuations of the Library, supervise Makerspace student employees at the evacuation point until it is safe to re-enter the building. Ensure the compliance of all users and student assistants with Makerspace safety policies
