The full salary range for this position is $67,200 - $119,600/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,200 - $93,400/yr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Office of Education Partnerships, the K12 Programs Director at UCSB has primary responsibility for the planning, directing, budgeting, controlling, resource development and evaluation of the MESA College Preparation Program and the UCSB Destination College Advising Corps (DCAC) Program. Provides supervisory management of all program and administrative staff. Provides leadership for program planning and sustainability to ensure integrated and coordinated services that promote the goals and mission of the K12 academic preparation programs, the Office of Education Partnerships and the Division of Academic Affairs. Promotes and facilitates internal and external relations and partnerships directed at increasing campus outreach, diversity and academic excellence, and academic success among K-12. Promotes new and sustains and fosters existing partnerships with K-12 schools throughout the Santa Barbara and Ventura County region and the Central Coast K-16 Regional Education Collaborative in support of increasing student participation and college going rates among low-income, first-generation college going students with a specific focus on MESA and the Destination College Advising Corps.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5 years of management experience.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with high-achieving, low-income and first-generation populations in pre-college programs or educational context.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fiscal management experience. 
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct K-14 academic preparation professionals in the administration.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including presentation, communication, negotiation, leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Extensive knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low income, first generation, and urban youth. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of K-14 education (including knowledge of college entrance and high school graduation requirements), policies, and educational equity issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of higher education institutions, admissions and financial aid requirements, and matriculation processes.
  • Advanced writing skills with demonstrated experience producing complex reports.
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills with ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

50% Management, Program Coordination Supervision (MSP) - MESA College Preparation Program (MCP): Develops and implements the mission and vision for the UCSB MCP by providing a range of academic, social and career support services to students at both the pre-college that will enhance access to and success in their university education. Provides the overall management, leadership and supervision for all MESA College Preparation Program staff and guide the day-to-day operations of the program. Develops, implements and sustains MESA programs, activities and academic initiatives in partnership with elementary, middle and high schools in the Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties region. Develops and negotiates MESA school site and/or district implementation plans and formal site agreements. Develops K-12 teacher and curricular development materials in math, science and engineering. Provides academic guidance services for UC and CSU admittance requirements and college preparatory courses transitioning MCP students through college admit and SAT workshops. Provides leadership on MESA Special Initiatives (e.g. Summer Academies, Teacher Professional Development initiatives, grant-funded projects, Engineering Design Challenge competitions). Direct, develop and manage all budget and report processes and final submissions for approval by the statewide MESA leadership at UC Office of the President (UCOP), Director of the Office of Education Partnerships, College of Engineering, and other UCSB senior leadership. This includes monitoring cash flow, planning and approving expenditures, and maintaining budgetary records and files. Coordinate periodic informational and budgetary meetings with principal investigators, stakeholders, school-site and district administrators, university administrators, foundation board members, community leaders, and others as needed. Ensure compliance with all Statewide MESA guidelines and deliverables. Direct, supervise, train and evaluate all MESA staff members. Meet regularly with the MESA staff to review program, activities, calendars, and timelines and to discuss best practices to achieve program goals and objectives. Ensure that personnel issues regarding hiring, training, career/professional development, discipline, termination, performance review and salary determination, as well as programmatic issues regarding the implementation and evaluation of the key MESA academic preparation components are handled efficiently and effectively. Maintain accountability for MESA's participation in Statewide MESA activities such as MESA Day, Parent/Student leadership conferences, and the Professional Development opportunities. Establish and maintain partnerships with other campus outreach programs such as DCAC College Advising Corps, Early Academic Outreach (EAO), the CA Nanosytems Institute, Marine Science Institute outreach programs, Student Initiated Outreach Programs (SIOP), and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).

25% Management, Program Coordination and Supervision (DCAC) - Destination College Advising Corps (DCAC) Program: Develops and implements the mission and vision for the UCSB Destination College Advising Corps Program (DCAC) by providing a range of academic, social and career support services to students at the pre-college level that will enhance access to and success in their higher education. Provides the overall management, leadership and supervision for Destination College Advising Corps Program Schools Program staff and guide the day-to-day operations of the program. Directs, develops and manages all budget and report processes required by UCOP, Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) and OEP. Directs, supervises, trains and evaluates all DCAC staff members. Meets regularly with the DCAC staff to review program, activities, calendars, and timelines and to discuss best practices to achieve program goals and objectives. Ensures that personnel issues regarding hiring, training, career/professional development, discipline, termination, performance review and salary determination, as well as programmatic issues regarding the implementation and evaluation of the key academic preparation components are handled efficiently and effectively.

10% Resource Development - Works with Office of Education Partnerships support staff, and other units as needed, to develop funding proposals to support and sustain MESA/DCAC programming and staffing. Collaborates with development staff in researching and identifying extramural funding sources, including donors and alumni networks, to support the academic mission of OEP as it relates to MESA and Pathways programming. Serves as the official spokesperson for the Office of Education Partnerships, MESA Programs, and DCAC Programs at special functions and meeting with a wide variety of constituents (e.g. donors, foundation and industry representatives, students, parents, teachers, school-site and district administrators).

10% Evaluation and Reporting - Directs and coordinates the evaluation systems for both the MCP and DCAC program. Prepares reports for dissemination to relevant agencies as required, including Office of the President, Office of Education Partnerships, National Science Foundation, the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor's offices, and foundations, among others. Provides primary leadership and responsibility for preparation of the State Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) report and the MCP Program reporting. Works in close collaboration with OEP Evaluation Coordinator and MESA staff and DCAC Staff to develop and manage plans for data collection and analysis to inform program improvement on an ongoing basis.

5% Campus, Regional, Statewide Leadership - Represents MESA and the Office of Education Partnerships on the Chancellor's Outreach Advisory Board (COAB), and other campus and community committees and task-forces as needed. Attends regular Statewide MESA Center Directors (MCP) meetings and other professional development trainings and meetings, i.e. UC College Access Preparation Forum, CAC workshops and conferences as required. Participates in the Central Coast K-16 Regional Collaborative on behalf of USCB MCP, to encourage and fosters opportunities across K12 segments, CA community colleges, and UCSB. Promotes and facilitates relations and partnerships with campus programs directed at increasing campus outreach, diversity and academic excellence.
