Departmental Overview

The Statistics Department, in the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), was originally established in 1938 as the first center in the country for statistical research. Since its inception, graduates and faculty of Berkeley have shaped the foundations of statistics. The department continues to be recognized as one of the preeminent centers for Probability and Statistics in the world.

The department places a strong emphasis on research through partnerships working with institutions and industry partners that include: LBNL (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab), the Sloan Institute, the Simons Institute, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS), Google, Microsoft, Citadel, Genentech and departments such as; Astronomy, Bioengineering, Biostatistics, Demography, Economics, EECS (Electrical Engineering & Computer Science), GSPP (Goldman School of Public Policy), IB (Integrative Biology), Mathematics, MCB (Molecular & Cell Biology), Physics, and Sociology.

The Statistics Department has 47 active faculty and emeritus faculty, 10 Lecturers, 100 graduate students, 200 undergraduate students, and 13 career staff positions. The faculty have a dizzying array of honors and awards including The National Medal of Science, the COPSS award (the Statistics "Nobel"), and 6 members of the National Academy of Science. The department is highly attractive to Visiting Faculty, Visiting Scholars, Postdoctoral Scholars and students from around the world and currently enrolls 10,000 students in its courses annually.

The Director of Administration is the most senior staff administrator in the Department of Statistics and reports to the department chair. The role is responsible for ensuring the continuity of all department operations, financials, and other unit administrative needs through subordinate management staff. The incumbent provides strategic guidance to the department chair regarding long- and short-range strategic planning and directing all activities of the department in support its strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

25% Strategic Planning: 

  • Advises the department chair and other stakeholders regarding department, campus, and system-wide policies and procedures. Recommends and oversees the implementation and documentation of departmental processes, policies and procedures. Responsible for administrative operations and short- and long-range planning that align with the department's strategic priorities.

20% Financial Oversight: 

  • Oversees the department's financial portfolio. Advises the chair regarding opportunities for revenue generation as well as cost-saving measures. Partners with the department chair and department finance manager in the preparation and financial management of the department's annual temporary academic support (TAS) budget and expenditures. Oversees payroll reconciliation and annual HCP/CalPlanning forecast and operating budget processes.

25% Organizational Planning and Human Resources Oversight:

  • Makes recommendation to the department chair regarding the organizational structure of the department's administration. Internally approves the recruitment of all administrative staff positions, and supports the training, performance management, and professional development of all administrative staff, through direct and indirect supervision. Supervises the department academic and staff HR manager to ensure that all academic and staff HR actions are completed in a timely manner in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.

10% Student Services Oversight:

  • Partners with department faculty, the departmental director of student services, and campus units to advise on and address in the resolution of matter of issues related to student success and wellbeing. Actively partners with chair, the departmental director of student services, computing staff, faculty, and campus units to support instructional resilience. Supervises the director of student services. The student service team supports departmental student advising, course scheduling, and other academic program support.

15% Departmental Administration:

  • Ensures the maintenance and allocation of departmental space in Evans Hall. Partners with the college and campus to plan the upcoming move from Evans Hall to the Gateway. Ensures the maintenance and allocation of departmental space in the Gateway, as needed.
  • Supervises the departmental director of computing and the statistical computing consultant, who support research and instructional computing via the Statistical Computing Facility (SCF).
  • Advises the chair and relevant faculty regarding opportunities for external partnerships including events, conferences, and workshops.
  • Supervises the departmental director of communications and external relations whose role involves development, communications and external relations for the department. Ensures the continuity of department branding/messaging across all outreach methods.
  • Supervises the front office manager.
  • Represents the department on business affairs to the institution community.

5% Professional Development and Growth:

  • Engages in opportunities for training, workshops, seminars, pertinent to the position.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Broad knowledge of University's rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures, with a focus on budget, account and fund management, personnel policy and personnel management under labor contract(s).
  • Skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Experience supervising staff, preferably within a complex organization that includes a diverse range of services (HR, student services, administrative support). Experience working with faculty.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence; strong organizational and customer service skills; ability to set and manage multiple conflicting priorities.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff and faculty.
  • Advanced knowledge of or ability to quickly learn UC policies, procedures, and practices.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $105,500 to $162,800 yearly, not to exceed $200,700. The salary offer to the final candidate will take into consideration their experience and salary equity with current UC Berkeley employees working in a similar roles.

  • This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. 
  • This position is Exempt and paid monthly.
  • The classification is ADMIN MGR 1 (0547).
