Departmental Overview

Residential and Student Service Programs (RSSP) helps retain all students, regardless of their academic preparation, resources, or background, by providing a safe, functional, engaging, and diverse environment. Students are more likely to persist at Berkeley when they gain a sense of belonging by participating in our co-curricular activities. We understand the issues most relevant to students today, and provide services to help ensure Berkeley maintains our talented students, regardless of background or resources. Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Residential & Student Service Programs (RSSP), and a core member of the RSSP leadership team, the Director of Graduate & Family Living ensures residents who live in graduate and family university housing, including University Village (UVA), are well supported in terms of housing facilities and residential life. Partnering with building operations staff, the Director ensures a clean, well-maintained, safe graduate and family living environment, providing timely outreach, and promoting engagement for residents and staff. The UVA is an off-campus location and the Director will be responsible for reporting to work at both locations and moving between the locations on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

  • Manages, plans and administers all administrative operations at University Village Albany (UVA) as well as Graduate & Family Residential Life. 
  • Develops and monitors long range planning, operational processes, budgets, staff FTE, and space planning for all graduate and family housing services/facilities (in collaboration with RSSP Maintenance, Trades, Grounds, Custodial and Projects teams) as well as Graduate & Family Residential Life. 
  • Establishes and recommends change to policies which affect Graduate & Family facilities and residential life.
  • Coordinates/oversees engagement with other University units including Equity & Inclusion Basic Needs, University Health Social Services, Graduate Division, Recreation Sports, Local Government Relations, Facilities Services, UC Police Department, Capital Strategies and campus leadership to ensure appropriate support resources are invested in UVA/offered to UVA residents.
  • Oversees crisis management (domestic violence, mental health emergencies, child abuse, child safety and crisis counseling) for graduate and family residents. 
  • Advises Residential Life Assistant Directors on incidents, due process rights of students, reports, conduct hearings, and appropriate sanctions. 
  • Assures the timely and thorough completion of conduct processes and reports.
  • Oversees management of various academic and social support programs geared towards the diverse populations (e.g. graduate students, non-traditional students, single student parents, non-student family members, etc.) in a residential community.
  • Represents the University in community engagement opportunities (e.g., Albany, Emeryville and Berkeley City meetings), in conjunction with University Government Relations.
  • Oversees the preparation and management of grants involving a diverse and/or variety of funding sources and agencies.
  • Professional development.

Required Qualifications 

  • Broad knowledge of and/or can quickly learn the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on residential life and personnel management.
  • Interpersonal skills and intercultural competence, including a strong understanding of diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment principles, and demonstrated experience in evaluating risks in a student life environment.
  • Knowledge in the areas of counseling and crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, student conduct administration, multicultural and educational programming, academic support, and safety and security programs.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. 
  • Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ability to work well under pressure/deal with crisis management situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence/persuade all levels of staff.
  • Broad knowledge of and/or can quickly learn common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other locations.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • General knowledge of Child Welfare Laws, Domestic Violence protocols and suicide prevention and intervention methods.
  • Minimum of 5 years of cumulative experience in residential, student development, or higher education administration.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Business Administration or an equivalent degree and/or experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $135,000.00 - $165,000.00.
