Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $51,700 - $89,100.  The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $52,500 - $67,000.

About the Job

The Community Engagement Center (CEC), a leader in bringing together UC Merced students, staff, faculty, and community members, strives to create reciprocal partnerships that generate student learning, build capacity, and solve problems through service, scholarship, and leadership. These relationships contribute to building a healthy and sustainable community (local to global) and to creating positive change. The CEC is a unit within the Office of Leadership, Service, and Career. The Community Engagement Center Coordinator, under the direction of the associate director, supports this mission by working to manage the day-to-day programs, services, and events for the CEC. Additionally, as a member of the Office of Leadership, Service and Career team, the coordinator supports programmatic and student engagement efforts of the department. The Coordinator is responsible for managing and facilitating the programmatic planning and assists in the planning of service projects, developmental activities, and large-scale programs. The coordinator supports the First Year Leadership and Service Community and other programs as needed. The coordinator also supervises student staff in the Center. This position coordinates the large-scale Impact Initiatives, which are partnership programs between UC Merced and the greater Merced community. The coordinator organizes and publicizes one-time community service projects which provide students with the opportunity to partner with and get to know new community agencies and organizations and to participate in various short (1-4 hour) service events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Community Engagement Coordinator will work with community partners and with campus stakeholders (students, staff, faculty, instructors) to develop projects, both short-term/one-time and long-term/semester-long opportunities that provide reciprocal benefit to all stakeholders. Project development will include knowledge and consideration of campus/community agreements, community partner identified need(s), and potential for building capacity, as well as student applicability, safety, learning outcomes, and assessment of project outcomes for all stakeholders. Provides support and oversight for community and student-led community engagement events and for annual campus-wide community outreach events and activities Including National Days of Service. Provides implementation support for all stakeholders (community partners, faculty/instructors, students) including managing transportation. Assists with off-campus training, site visits, and annual recognition events. Participates in and supports fundraising efforts and grant writing.
  • Develops and maintains campus-wide information to maintain university database of all community engagement-related activities. Participates in the planning and preparation and provides support for all aspects of the Leadership and Service Living Learning Community in the residence halls. Facilitate tracking and support of Public Service and Leadership Certificate experiences housed within the Community Engagement Center. Leads workshops and class orientations to introduce students to community engagement concepts and practices, projects, provides materials, opportunities, and instruction for pre- and post-engagement preparation and reflection experiences. Partners with and provides liaison support in the messaging and promotion of Leadership, Service & Career programs and initiatives and with College Corps outreach activities. Assists in the marketing of the Community Engagement Center and with the recruitment of stakeholders, collaborates with other campus departments and units in community outreach activities. Develops and implements assessments and evaluations of programs and events. Assists with the development of unit assessment goals.
  •  Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises student staff. Meets regularly with student staff members. Provides for ongoing training and staff development opportunities for direct reports. Maintains a working knowledge of university personnel policies.
  • Compiles data for monthly, semi-annual, and annual reports to be used with internal and external constituents. Represents the Office of Leadership, Service and Career on campus-wide committees. Functions as a member in the Office of Leadership, Service and Career by facilitating and supporting department wide programs, events, and initiatives. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by the leadership team.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience or equivalent experience/training.
  • Valid California driver's license.

Critical Knowledge, Experience and Competencies

  • Knowledge of community engagement and development theory and practice. 
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice. 
  • Experience with service-learning programs and service projects.
  • Experience creating and implementing training models and programs. Ability to deliver educational workshops.
  • Skill to work independently and ability to be inventive and creative, including but not limited to initiating new programs, conceptualizing, organizing, and implementing change.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to set priorities, balance a large workload, multitask, adhere to schedules, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of colleagues, supervisors, administrators, students, community partners, faculty, staff, visitors and other parties.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with all various constituencies in an unbiased, reasonable, and fair manner.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write complex and comprehensive reports, marketing copy, general correspondence, and other documents. The ability to make clear, informative, and persuasive presentations to internal and external groups.
  • Ability to foresee needed change, set realistic goals and objectives, and organize resources.
  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
