Working Days and Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (Possible M-F, 7:30-4:30)

Student Health is a full service on campus primary healthcare facility for UCSB students. We see students on both an appointment and walk in basis. Our auxiliary services included on-site laboratory, pharmacy, x-ray, lab and physical therapy. Our specialty services include psychiatry and sports medicine. An extensive alcohol and drug program compliments other behavioral health services.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general direction of the Senior Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist) will assist in the overall operation of the clinical laboratory of the Student Health Service by performing the duties of testing personnel (as specified by CLIA 88) in the specialties of hematology, urinalysis, clinical microscopy, diagnostic immunology, chemistry, microbiology, and virology/molecular diagnostics.

Must be capable of working independently and making independent judgment while maintaining compliance with existing laws, regulations and policies. Must possess a high degree of accuracy and precision. Exercises a high degree of independent judgment while dealing with clinicians, patients, health service staff and laboratory related technical situations. Is capable of fast, accurate laboratory work while doing multiple procedures. Is familiar with all laboratory equipment including hematology, urine and chemistry analyzers and other equipment such as centrifuges, vortexes, microscopes, autoclave, point of care devices and incubators.

This position requires that all instruments be maintained, safe, and calibrated to assure accuracy and operation in compliance with existing preventive maintenance, Q.C, Q.A., and safety guidelines. Maintains the equipment and the entire work area in a clean, presentable fashion to preclude injury to self and others. 

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. Graduation from college with Bachelor of Science degree in major of appropriate scientific field.
  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientists license at all times during employment.
  • 3 – 5 years of training and experience sufficient to comply with Federal CLI 88 requirements for personnel of high complexity testing.
  • Familiar with all laboratory equipment, including Hematology, Microbiology, Urinalysis, Molecular and Chemistry analyzers and other standard laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 – 5 years clinical lab experience in a high complexity CLIA laboratory. 
  • Minimum of 3 years experience of Microbiology.

  • Must successfully complete and pass the background check and credentialing process before employment and date of hire. 
  • To comply with Santa Barbara County Public Health Department Health Officer Order, this position must provide evidence of annual influenza vaccination, or wear a surgical mask while working in patient care areas during the influenza season.
  • Any HIPAA or FERPA violation is subject to disciplinary action. 
  • Student Health is closed between the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays.

 

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Technical
90% Essential Duties

• Performs testing in the areas of urinalysis, hematology, serology, chemistry, molecular and microbiology. Performs culture workups, microscopic examination of wet smears, gram stains, differentials, ectoparasites, urine and KOH mounts. Performs Point of Care testing. 

• Must have the necessary computer skills to enter results into and to report results from the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in an accurate and timely manner, and to utilize the electronic medical record system for test orders and monitoring of laboratory test results.

 • Assists w/ the monitoring and troubleshooting of the EMR and LIS computer systems to ensure timely reporting and error correction.

 • Performs clean-up, preventative maintenance, Quality Control and recalibration on instruments, phlebotomy, and periodic monitoring and stocking of supplies.

 • Prepares any associated paper work such as posting completed laboratory forms, performing quality control procedures and monitoring pertinent logs.

 • Assist in training and maintaining competencies. 


Meetings/Professional Duties
5% Essential Duties

• Attends meetings and in other ways remains current in the profession (reading publications, obtaining CE credits, etc.).

• Completes all tasks as assigned by the Department and Division.
 

Back-Up Supervisor
5% Essential Duties

• Maintains the supervision of support personnel.

• Assumes, as qualified, the duties of the Supervising Technologist when he/she is not available.
