Job Summary

The Basic Needs Case Manager provides leadership, guidance and support to students experiencing the most extreme basic needs crises including but not limited to direct food support, cash equivalent food support, rent support, eviction prevention, emergency housing, temporary sheltering, and financial challenges related to transportation emergencies, medical costs not covered by other programs on campus. They perform a full range of responsibilities requiring comprehensive expertise in social work assessment and crisis management. A primary function of the Care Coordinator is to facilitate support of students in distress by providing crisis resolution, as well as identifying a short and long-term plan to address students' basic needs insecurities.

The Case Manager will interface and collaborate with various campus departments including, but not limited to Student Housing & Dining Services, the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, and the Office of Student Support & Judicial Affairs, Academic Advisors in each of the four Colleges, Graduate Coordinators, Office of Educational Opportunity and Enrichment Services, Student Disability Center, the UC Degree Completion Program, and the Student Accounting Office. The Care Coordinator will work independently under general supervision of the Assistant Director for Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling or other related field or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of trauma-informed assessment & intervention.
  • Advanced skill in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and planning
  • Advanced knowledge of physical and mental health care and service; crisis
  • intervention/management/prevention; and educational outreach.
  • Advanced knowledge of the structures and systems that disproportionately impact individuals from marginalized or low-resource communities, with demonstrated awareness and engagement in addressing the particular impacts of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, immigration status, disability, nationality, religion, veteran status, and other statuses impacted by social structures.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and agility necessary to address the complex needs of diverse students, staff, and community partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social work, counseling or other related field or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience in working with adults and young adults with mental illness, homelessness and substance use disorders preferably in community-based settings highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with clients to support their access to Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or other means-tested programs
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

We define basic needs as financial stability, access to nutritious and sufficient food, secure housing, equitable health and medical care, support for emotional and mental well-being, affordable transportation, resources for personal hygiene, and emergency assistance for students with dependents.

The Basic Needs Center team is committed to taking action toward justice and belonging throughprevention, intervention and emergency relief efforts addressing students' food, housing and financial needs. The Basic Needs Center offers the following services to all students: walk-in and virtual drop-in services, case management/care coordination services, emergency and long term food support, housing support and financial resources.
