Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $83,400 - $155,800.  The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,000 - $110,000.


Job Closing Date

Remote/Hybrid eligibility: The hybrid schedule for this position is up to 2 days per week (after the 6 month probationary period).

About the Job

Manages a highly-specialized team and technical functions with the focus on transition programs and learning supports for specialized populations, including, but not limited to first generation students, students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, students who have been in the child welfare system and/or have experienced homelessness, and transfer student support, programs for veterans, peer mentoring, and low income students. These specialized and technical functions have an organizational & institution-wide impact on student success and retention. Determines vision for area unit along with short and long-term strategy and goals and objectives. Participates in the formulation of operational and strategic planning for the department. The Associate Director for Belonging & Persistence is an integral part of the leadership team of the Calvin E. Bright Success Center. Works with the Assistant Dean of Students to develop and implement policy and practices for the unit. Aids in the development and management of the annual operating budget. Develops and implements policy practices and assessment for the area unit. Evaluates the performance of subordinate professionals and support staff with a high degree of autonomy. Evaluates the performance of subordinate professionals and support staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and supervise university wide transition & learning support programs designed to meet the needs of an increasing and ever changing student body. Design programs to meet the unique needs of first generation students, students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, students who have been part of the child welfare system and/or have experienced homelessness, and low income students. Responsible for strategic planning, budget management, program assessment, and hiring, training, and supervision of staff. Implement programs designed to support year round transition and student success. Supervise a staff responsible for the design of programs that meet the needs of historically minoritized college student populations including: undocumented, first generation, low income, and foster youth. Communicate and collaborate with Assistant Dean of Students/ Director regarding program status. Serve as the designated authority to make decisions related to the daily and general operations of the program. Supervise professional and student staff responsible for program development and implementation
  • Manage a complex budget that includes revenue generation, university funding, and grant funding. Responsible for overall program budget management. Communicate & collaborate with Assistant Dean of Students regarding budget management & status.
  • Evaluates and identifies short and long-term trends in student demographics, academic profiles, the use of instructional technology, and current educational practices. Uses assessment tools and analytics to evaluate effectiveness of transition and support programs and makes changes using this data. Use promising practices, data, and scholarship to inform planning, program development/implementation, and advocacy. Researches and integrates new technologies to expand or enhance services.
  • Market transition support programs; conduct outreach to students, academic departments, faculty and the organization. 
  • Develop and implement assessment plan for area. Design tools for data collection. Collaborate with partner units to ensure assessment aligns with current BSC practices, mission, vision, and equity and inclusion statement. 
  • Consult with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Provost, deans, faculty and partner units to identify the needs of students and issues impacting successful transition to UC Merced. Identify needs and concerns, develop training, and provide specialized expertise.
  • Serves as a USTU 010 Freshman Success Course instructor.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area from an accredited institution.
  • Master's degree in a related area from an accredited institution. (Preferred)
  • Five years of progressively responsible related experience / or equivalent experience/ training.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Advanced knowledge in college student development and higher education transition theories. 
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues that historically minoritized student populations experience in higher education. Experience developing and implementing programs for historically minoritized college student populations including: transfer, undocumented, first generation, low income, and foster youth.
  • Knowledge of program assessment and survey development.
  • Experience supervising a diverse team of professional and student staff.  
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Broad knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
  • Broad knowledge in strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
  • Proven skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving. 
  • Organizational skills and project management skills. 
  • Proven skills in budgeting. 
  • Skills in performance evaluation.
