The Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley (GGSC) studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society. For more than 20 years, the GGSC has translated research findings into freely available resources that support well-being for all. Led by world-renowned experts in positive psychology, we create articles, podcast episodes, online courses, and practical toolkits to help everyone live a happier, more meaningful life.

Since its founding, our Center has highlighted the importance of building social connection across groups, offering practical strategies for overcoming bias and prejudice, expanding one's circle of care, and promoting diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Position Overview 

This position serves as the GGSC's Assistant Director, Development and is responsible for analyzing, strategizing, and executing key areas of our multifaceted fundraising program. Working closely with the GGSC's Development Director, the Assistant Director will focus especially on growing and managing our annual fund program; they will also contribute to our major donors program and help coordinate grant proposals and reports for institutional donors.

The Assistant Director will report to the Development Director, forming a team of two full-time staff plus additional part-time support from student assistants as needed. They will collaborate with colleagues across the GGSC--including marketing, events, and program directors. They will also liaise with our colleagues in UC Berkeley's central development office, who manage prospect research, gift processing, and the campuswide donor CRM.

The GGSC has approximately a $4 million annual budget, about $3 million of which is contributed through a combination of gifts and grants. The Assistant Director, Development will be responsible for raising at least $250,000 annually, primarily by developing our annual fund and leadership giving program. They will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors individually and in groups, utilizing methods such as mailed appeals, emails, and crowdfunding campaigns.

Responsibilities

Annual Fund, Leadership Giving Pipeline Development & Stewardship 

  • Manage the solicitation, renewal, and tracking of 1,500+ annual fund donors (up to $1,000), including 2-3 solicitation mailings/year and monthly email newsletters
  • Devise and implement new strategies to grow the annual giving program by attracting new donors, including by drawing on the GGSC's large website audience (~1 million visitors/month) 
  • Work with Development Director to build the leadership giving pipeline and community through activities including hosted in-person and virtual events, thank you gifts, and a new stewardship program for mid-level donors ($1,000-$25,000 annually)
  • Collaborate with Operations & Events Coordinator to support two Advisory Board meetings per year, including invitations/RSVPs, agenda planning, and day-of event support
  • Partner with GGSC marketing & program staff to integrate appeals into GGSC media, including webpages, podcast episodes, and email newsletters
  • Develop and coordinate monthly donor e-newsletter content, including interviewing donors and writing impact stories
  • Coordinate donor thank-you emails, letters and other stewardship outreach, coordinating with University gift processing and stewardship teams as needed
  • Provide frontline support for donors and prospects who have questions regarding their donations

Database Systems & Reporting

  • Liaise with UC Berkeley fundraising partners in University Donor and Alumni Relations (UDAR), Prospect Development, UC Berkeley's gift processing, database, and fund management teams, and various academic departments
  • Support portfolio development by entering contact reports and pending tasks in CRM, and pulling regular gift reports to prioritize solicitations

Development Program Coordination

  • Prepare donor/prospect research briefings as needed for events and outreach
  • Project manage written donor-facing pieces, including custom proposals, reports, updates, and an Annual Report
  • Maintain Development calendar of grant deadlines, events, webinars, course launches, appeals, campaigns, and other engagement opportunities and activities throughout the year
  • Hire and supervise student assistant(s) for administrative support as needed 

Professional Development & Team Contribution

  • Identify and utilize resources such as online trainings, professional associations, and recent research on best practices for annual fund and pipeline programs
  • Participate in GGSC staff meetings, retreats, and other strategic planning discussions that focus on the direction of the development program and the GGSC in general

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field such as nonprofit management, communications, psychology/social sciences, or business
  • At least 3 years of experience in nonprofit development or related experience 
  • Experience using a donor database or CRM, such as Salesforce or Raiser's Edge 
  • Experience and comfort working with the Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Zoom
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives, provide positive customer service, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent project management, organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Strong ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive donor information
  • Commitment to building a work environment centered on the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Passion for the mission and values of GGSC, with an interest in well-being, positive psychology, and social change

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting, developing, and/or leading a successful annual fund program
  • Donor database proficiency, especially with CADS (UC Berkeley's donor database) 
  • Experience using metrics to inform pipeline development
  • Coordination of and participation in donor-facing stewardship activities, including in-person and virtual events 
  • Experience researching potential individual and/or institutional donors 
  • Exceptional, demonstrated writing skills, including journalism or content creation 
  • Desire to build skills and advance professionally, especially in the annual fund area

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000- $100,000 commensurate with experience.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hour week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly.
  • This position is eligible for full UC Benefits (link is provided above), vacation and sick accrual, pension plan, and optional retirement savings opportunities.
  • Proximity to the Berkeley office is preferred, although hybrid remote working arrangements up to 60% time may be possible. The Assistant Director will work in our Berkeley office at least two days per week, TBD.
