Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $91,300 to $170,700/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $125,000 to $145,000/yr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

 

The Assistant Clinical Director supports the mission of CAPS and the University in providing the highest quality mental health services for diverse students at UCSB. The incumbent performs a wide range of complex tasks with a high level of autonomy, including individual and group psychotherapy with students, consultation, outreach, prevention and mental health education on campus, emergency services, and supervision. Participates in meetings and committees, completing necessary charting and data requirements. The incumbent acts in a manner consistent with the APA code of ethics and in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA requirements. Works independently, completing duties by following established departmental and University policies and procedures. Develops, recommends, and interprets established policies and procedures, and problem-solving are required. Responsible for direct supervision of clinicians, including recruitment and hiring. Conducts annual performance evaluations for supervisees. Provides leadership, direct supervision and consultation to clinical and support staff regarding outreach strategies. Manages the clinical onboarding of new staff and develops and trains new and current staff in policies, procedures, and clinical delivery systems for the agency, including crisis intervention for the campus. Responsible for managing ProtoCall. Creates and maintains clinical reports regarding utilization and clinical flow.

 

Required Education and License

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited doctoral program.
  • Current license as a Psychologist in the State of California (or eligible within 6 months).

 

Required Work Experience 

  • 5 years of post licensure direct clinical experience in a mental health setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience performing clinical duties in a College Counseling or Community Mental Health Center.

 

Other Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with crisis intervention and/or coordination of care.
  • Experience conducting suicide assessment, crisis assessment, and crisis management services.
  • Experience in clinical supervision.
  • Experience with providing evaluation, diagnosis, and psychotherapy services.
  • Experience conducting psychological assessments. 
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis, develop and present recommendations and courses of treatment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct and diagnostic/psychological testing methodologies.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough skills associated with conducting complex diagnoses, problem-solving, and critical-thinking.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with a diverse client group, members of the medical staff and faculty.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a university counseling center.
  • Experience supervising other staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience providing counseling to communities with intersectional/interlocking identities.
  • Prior experience with leading or developing interventions or other clinically focused special projects.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

 

30% Administration - Serves as a member of the CAPS leadership team, in conjunction with the CAPS Executive Director and Clinical Director, providing leadership and managerial oversight of the clinical functions of CAPS and the development and implementation of policies and initiatives. Provides supervision to designated CAPS staff and assumes responsibility for the clinical operations of CAPS in the Executive Director and Clinical Director's absence. Co-leads the weekly CAPS Triage meeting. Participates on various campus and department committees such as QI, Governing Board, Peer Review and SBIT. Represents CAPS in both campus and community-wide meetings, programs, and events. Participates in the recruitment and hiring of clinicians. Conducts annual performance evaluations and manages daily schedule and clinical management oversight for supervisees. Fully responsible for discipline and grievance resolutions. Manages the clinical onboarding process of new clinicians. Creates and/or updates written policy manuals for agency clinical procedures and processes. Creates and maintains quarterly reports and end-of-the-year report on all counseling functions, intakes, and clinician utilization. Lead special projects as assigned by the Executive Director or that advance services provided and or department policies.

 

30% Clinical Oversight - Manages the onboarding and clinical training of clinicians to ensure compliance requirements appropriate with QI Analyst, Executive Director, and Clinical Director. Trains staff members in accordance with campus and departmental policies and procedures. Trains and monitors clinical staff in the utilization of electronic records. Review utilization reports to ensure clinical flow efficiency. Ensures proper procedures are being taken when utilizing electronic medical records. Manages Release of Records and Subpoena requests and documentation in coordination with the Executive Director and QI Analyst Manages after-hours crisis phone service ProtoCall to ensure 24-hour on-call assistance for students. Provides follow-up clinical support to callers who have utilized the phone crisis counseling program. Is responsible for triaging high-risk calls. Provides training to staff in counseling topics as appropriate and trains para-professional staff as needed. Maintains adherence to all legal and ethical guidelines for the practice of psychology, including but not limited to HIPAA compliance standards. Maintains liaisons with campus and community mental health, law enforcement, and crisis agencies, including but not limited to Student Health, Disabled Students, campus police, County Mental Health, and Cottage Hospital.

 

25% Consultation and Outreach - Provides crisis intervention and postvention services to campus as needed in cases of suicide, deaths, or other tragedies as requested. Manages educational psychoeducational seminars for staff, trainees and the campus community. Contributes and serves on campus wide mental health committees and task forces. Leads the agency in developing and providing outreach and clinical services to underrepresented groups and special needs groups. Participates and organizes department outreach programs to a diverse student community, including the traditionally underserved within assigned University Housing locations and other locations as requested. Develops and trains staff in policies, procedures and clinical delivery systems for the agency, including crisis intervention for the campus. Works to establish standards, policies, and objectives of CAPS and communicates these standards, policies, and objectives. Establishes departmental goals and objectives in coordination with the Executive Director and Clinical Director. Contributes to systemwide consultations and establishes and maintains liaison relationships with greater Santa Barbara and Isla Vista community mental health care providers. Evaluate the effectiveness of outreach programs and oversee the quality of care and adherence to protocol for clinical services to groups. Keeps abreast of changes in legal and accreditation standards, developing, implementing, and monitoring necessary changes in procedures and/or protocols. Provides consultation to residential life staff, administrators, and faculty about psychological matters pertaining to students, including but not limited to suicide prevention. Reviews and coordinates requests for mental health outreach and programs. Consults with campus departments and within residential life about managing students with severe psychological problems. Provides oversight and consultation of the Mental Health Peer program including hiring and training of student peers in coordination with the Assistant Director of Mental Health Outreach and Programs. Maintains database for community providers and community referral resources.

 

15% Clinical Services - Provides psychotherapy and crisis intervention services to students with problems of a particularly complex or threatening nature. May conduct group psychotherapy and/or workshops. Assesses lethality of student threats of a suicidal or homicidal nature. Make appropriate referrals to Student Health Psychiatry and/or facilitate off- campus hospitalization as needed. Provides follow-up services to callers who have utilized our after-hours phone crisis counseling program. Serves as crisis on-call staff and facilitates hospitalizations. Provides crisis back-up as needed. Includes evenings and weekends. Provides psychological service for presenting concerns including but not limited to depression, anxiety, domestic violence, sexual abuse or rape, substance abuse, gender and multicultural concerns. Maintains current case records for each client seen or group conducted as mandated by law.
