Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $ $63,000 - $66,000/yr.

Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $61,700-$108,100/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Student Resource Building (SRB)

Working Days and Hours: M-F, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Innovates new programs and initiatives to advance advocacy efforts for Black students and other underrepresented students.  Keep record of hate and bias related incidents related to the Black campus community and work closely with other entities maintaining reporting mechanisms and addressing reports. Works closely with division staff to advocate for sound practices, outreach, intervention and education and training to the broader campus community for the improvement of campus climate and inclusion across all marginalized identities within the Black community. Develops innovative strategies that address issues such as racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia/heterosexism, and other forms of systematic exclusion and oppression in higher education. Develops programs to impact and improve campus climate and degree completion. Provides direction for campus in developing policies and procedures for implementation of student related equity and inclusion initiatives. Assess and advises high risk students and reviews campus options. Helps mitigate negative impacts on their well-being, course of study and future career planning. Embeds assessment into regular practice including integration in all program models.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Demonstrated experience working with and advocating for Black students in a university setting.
  • Experience in developing programming that responds to the needs and concerns of Black students. 
  • Ability to work on complex situations with a wide range of organizations and a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Ability to work independently, anticipate job requirements, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, and political acumen skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience/training.

35% Campus Advocacy & Education
Responsible for creating sound practices, outreach, intervention, education and training to the broader campus community for the improvement of the climate of inclusion for all marginalized identities within the Black community. Provides leadership and expertise about inclusive practices that promote diverse students' academic success and ensures their full access and participation in campus life. Participates in task forces, awareness training, restorative justice and mediation. Collaborates with multiple campus partners to advance these initiatives and campus's principles of community. Advocates and creates programs aimed at increasing retention, and inclusion of Black/African Diaspora students and fostering understanding across the campus community about issues such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and bias. Helps address the various needs of a diverse student population. Designs and develops programs and initiatives characterized by open and continuous communication that deepens understanding of the individual student's own and collective community's identity and culture and cultural wealth. Develops innovative strategies that address and/or respond to issues such as racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia/heterosexism, and other forms of systematic exclusion and oppression in higher education. Holds regular meetings, forums, and town halls catered to the Black community to better assess and respond to issues concerning the Black campus and surrounding community. Participates in comparable programs sponsored by partners such as the MCC, Student Affairs, Center for Black Studies Research, Department of Black Studies, EOP AdCRC, etc. Develops diversity, antiBlackness and inclusion training for new and continuing staff, students and faculty. Creates training on a wide range of diversity and inclusion topics for student organizations and other campus groups, per their request. Works in coordination with other academic and student service departments and diversity officers on efforts to improve or address campus climate. Participates in the campus's student-related equity, diversity and inclusion efforts, policy and procedure analysis and initiatives and interventions. Works closely with relevant entities who maintain reporting mechanisms about bias or hate incidents. Provides outreach and cultural support to students impacted. Consults and assists with the campus response and advocates for academic flexibility, when needed. Promotes the continued growth of the department's cultural programming and services in creating campus opportunities for a diverse student community. Develops assessment methods to measure impact of the department's advocacy services. Keeps records of student contacts, and incident response and training outcomes for department assessment efforts. 35% Student Services
Responsible for direct outreach and advocacy support for Black students related to equity and inclusion and campus climate. Includes student voice in the process. Ensures a holistic approach that: - Incorporates all issues impacting student success. -Develops intervention strategies based on the student's campus experience, impacts on academic performance, basic needs and emotional wellness. -Ensures advocacy efforts to support integration of student's goals and priorities. -Provides a pathway for students continued academic, leadership and research building capacity. - Aligns with campus resources and referral options. In consultation with the Assistant Director and in collaboration with colleagues: - Manages the successful development, planning and administration of advocacy services. - Assesses variables affecting the student's well-being, sense of belonging and safety and works closely with other departments to address student needs. - Represents Office of Black Student Development's mission to students, faculty and staff in this process. - Ensures efforts align to immediate and ongoing department priorities. Identifies individual needs by attending to factual, verbal and non-verbal information in the exploration of relevant experiences, behaviors, feelings and cultural influences. Guides students in developing problem resolution skills. Facilitates, develops, adapts and applies cross-cultural and identity models to aid students in developing personal identity; transitional adjustment; peers, faculty & staff interaction, and issue resolution. Works with distressed students; assess, advise and identify intervention needs. Interacts with appropriate campus or community agency to receive and refer students. Provides support throughout the intervention process. Makes referrals to CAPS, Student Health, Social Work, Colleges, SMHCS, AS Legal Services, Judicial Affairs, Dean of Students, Title IX, etc. Helps mitigate negative impacts of bias or hate incidents on student's wellbeing, course of study and future career planning. Participates in campus crisis response, crisis management, intervention consultation and protest demonstration support related to campus, local or national level hate incidents. Guided by professional competency areas for student affairs professionals as outlined by American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and/or Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Association (NASPA), maintains knowledge of student development theory and applicable student service and DEI models. Establishes relationships with relevant campus and community agencies and professional organizations. Maintains knowledge of current research, services and resources about/for Black and African Diaspora students to include intersection of identities, integrates knowledge and services for first generation, low income and underrepresented student populations.

30% Program Coordination, Assessment, and Budget
Innovates new programs and initiatives to advance advocacy efforts for Black students and other underrepresented students. Develops programs to impact and improve campus climate. Participates on relevant campus community advocacy initiatives. Collaborates with appropriate staff onincident response that might require involvement from other departments (e.g. Development office, CAPS, Judicial Affairs, Office of Equal Opportunity, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion offices, etc.). Collaborates with EOP, MCC, Center for Black Studies Research, Department of Black Studies and other departments. Provide program and support to other campus advocacy partners such as departments, or division areas. Participates in efforts designed to successfully onboard or transition diverse students, such as Orientation, Promise Scholars, Guardian Scholars, EOP STEP & STTP. Serves as a co leader or instructor for transition courses for Student Affairs, Academic Initiatives and EOP as needed. Contributes to course curriculum development. Participates in mentorship programs, and outreach efforts. Embeds assessment into regular practice including integration in all program models. Evaluates impact of student services and shares findings with relevant parties in and out of the department. Assists with department assessment efforts and reports. Works with the department team and key stakeholders on efforts and data to identify barriers and motivators impacting success of Black students at UCSB. Ensures a strength-based approach in assessing students' needs, aligning to campus priorities and responding to students' advocacy needs. Assists colleagues with the development of Black survey instruments, analysis of data and putting findings into action. Oversees budget allocation and expenditures for area of responsibility. Assists in developing and maintaining effective on-campus outreach and marketing efforts. Creates marketing plan for program area. Assists department colleagues in their program areas, when needed.
