DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Environmental Studies Department (ENVS) is committed to examining, understanding, and addressing environmental challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective. Our curriculum is designed to emphasize experiential learning and enhance practical environmental problem solving skills in order to enable our students to more effectively address the environmental challenges of the 21st century.

We offer 5 BA majors and 3 concentrations, a Masters in Geographic Information Systems, and we have a robust internship program where students receive practical experience that supplements classroom learning. There are over 650 proposed and declared majors. Sub-units within the department are the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) and the Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History (NCNH). We are also closely affiliated with the Center for Agroecology (CfA). We also work closely with staff in the UC Natural Reserve System whose offices are in space assigned to our department.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Environmental Studies (ENVS) Department Manager, and in coordination with the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, the Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Technologies, Applications, and Research (GISTAR) Program Director, and the ENVS Curriculum Committee, the advisor monitors student academic progress, assists students in making appropriate educational choices and decisions, and coordinates the Environmental Studies Internship Program. The Internship Program complements the ENVS curriculum by working with faculty to place students in a wide range of on and off-campus learning situations for academic credit.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $66,900 - $77,100 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Internship Liaison and Progress Monitoring

  • Act as the direct liaison between faculty, students, and internship sponsors to facilitate quality internship and senior comprehensive experiences.
  • Maintain close ties with department faculty regarding the academic goals of the program.
  • Assist faculty in designing experiential learning components for their courses, group internships, senior theses, and special programs.
  • Act as primary contact for students seeking information on internships and advise them of program requirements.
  • Arrange off-campus local, regional, or national placements that integrate the students' current academic interests as well as possible career goals.
  • Advise students about present openings and possibilities that might be investigated in relation to their interests and experience.
  • Screen applicants for acceptance into the program.
  • Suggest an appropriate faculty sponsor.
  • Resolve difficulties that may arise between students and agency sponsors, faculty, and students.
  • Develop/maintain relationships with other internship directors' programs locally and nationally.
  • Monitor and evaluate students' completion of internship obligations.
  • Maintain contact with students during the internship through orientation and midterm seminars, periodic phone contact, and site visits to monitor placement activity and develop new project ideas.
  • Set up and maintain student internship files on a quarterly basis.
  • Respond to student problems.

20% - Administer Academic Advising and Internship Programs

  • Responsible for data processing, editing, and proofing reports and outgoing correspondence.
  • Organize and file placement descriptions, correspondence, and committee work associated with the program.
  • Assist in coordinating and scheduling undergraduate curriculum.
  • Develop and maintain contact with other campus units including serving on various campus committees.
  • Prepare publicity, program rosters, and quarterly and annual statistics.
  • Order and track all program materials and supplies.
  • Process accounting and purchasing forms to initiate recharges, payments, and orders.
  • Track basic budget information.
  • Design and produce presentations, a handbook, and a website that acquaint the community and campus with the program.
  • Supervise two student employees (general office assistants).

15% - Academic Guidance

  • Advise on moderately complex academic and internship issues.
  • Design and conduct quarterly workshops to prepare students to apply for internships and seminars to ensure a quality field experience for those currently placed.
  • Counsel students individually who are unable to attend seminars.
  • Direct students to appropriate placements based on students' academic learning plans and faculty research interests.
  • Help students develop paper topics that integrate coursework, theory, and research with internships.
  • Instruct students in effective communication skills and writing of resumes.

10% - Initiate and Maintain Agency Contact

  • Initiate contact with a wide range of local, regional, state, and federal agencies, private industries, and educational institutions.
  • Negotiate placement opportunities to complement the Environmental Studies curriculum and make information available to students.
  • Evaluate academic suitability of placements, prepare and send out correspondence to agencies under own signature.
  • Advertise and update placements as needed.
  • Assist agencies in understanding program requirements and policies.
  • Maintain placement database with placement opportunities.

10% - Masters Program Administration

  • Work with the GISTAR Program Director and Graduate Program Coordinator to help promote and advertise the GISTAR program.
  • Work with students to place them with faculty for capstone projects.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
  • Experience in general office systems and procedures, and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in cooperation with a diverse group of staff, students, faculty, and community, and to obtain and disseminate information clearly and concisely
  • Excellent writing, editing, and graphic skills for preparing information/promotional materials, policies and reports.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under pressure of deadlines, constant interruptions, and heavy workload.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, FileMaker Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite to maintain correspondence, memos, reports, program records, informational materials, and forms with speed and accuracy.
  • Experience in advising college level students in academic and career planning.
  • Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA in Environmental Studies or relevant field.
  • Master's degree in Advising, Higher Education, or related area.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize university policies and regulations.
  • Familiarity with internship experience.
  • Experience working with community agencies (or equivalent background)
  • General knowledge of the UCSC campus. Familiarity with university programs, administrative units, and range of student services. Experience with UCSC computing applications or equivalent: AIS, EAB / Slug Success, OCA, Infoview, CCLP, CruzPay, WCMS, WordPress, Slate, StudentERSystem.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate has the option to work a hybrid work schedule. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
