Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Risk Manager (RN) for our Risk, Patient Safety, & Compliance division at our main medical campus. In this role, you will partner with the rest of the clinical team to ensure patient care is delivered at the highest standard of healthcare. At the University of Chicago Medicine, our quality and safety team work together to ensure we follow the highest standards for care — from preventing infections and continuously improving surgical care, to achieving high success rates for even the most complex procedures.

 

The primary function of the Risk Manager (RN) will be to work with clinicians and administrators within the Medical Center to conduct pro-active risk assessments, to review and investigate occurrence reports, adverse and sentinel events, and patient care complications and to identify patient safety issues, potential liability concerns and systems breakdowns.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct investigations through clinician interview, medical record assessment and environment of care analysis for assigned patient care events categorized as near miss, adverse or sentinel events.
  • Assist the Director and Senior Risk Manager in conducting root cause analysis meetings for all sentinel events and high risk systems issues identified by staff. Facilitate follow-up task force and committee meetings to address risk and safety issues identified.
  • Assist the Director and Senior Risk Manager in conducting pro-active risk assessments for identified sections and departments on an annual basis. Link specific initiatives to reductions in claims frequency and severity trends with the goal of reducing malpractice related expenditures.
  • Conduct educational sessions for faculty and staff on risk and safety related topics.
  • Participate in hospital committees and M&M conferences representing Departmental issues and risk and safety concerns. Prepare materials for presentation at the UCMC Quality Committee.
  • Provide support and consultation services to all staff on a rotating schedule for pager coverage 24/7. Facilitate disclosure conversations with clinicians and patient/family members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • An active Registered Nurse license through the State of Illinois
  • A working knowledge of Joint Commission standards
  • Excellent oral, and interpersonal written communication skills, poise in teaching and consulting
  • Strong organizing and data management skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, data base and graphics to design and implement monitoring and evaluation tools

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A Master's degree in Nursing, Administration, or Business
  • 5 or more years' experience in a hospital setting in a clinical or administrative role with specific experience in dealing with patient safety, risk management, and/or quality
  • Experience in process improvement methodologies, e.g. FMECA, SWOT Analysis, or Lean methodology

  • Shift: 8-hour shift – 8:00am to 4:30pm – No weekend coverage
