Join UChicago Medicine, as a Clinical Nurse Educator with the Pediatrics Care Center in Hyde Park.

 

A Clinical Nurse Educator is a nurse with previous educational experience whose focus is on staff development and nursing education. This nurse is an educator, consultant, role model, staff/patient advocate, change agent, leader and cost effective professional. In collaboration with nursing leadership, the Clinical Nurse Educator designs, develops, implements, and evaluates a variety of educational offerings in order to improve nursing care and clinical/organizational outcomes.  The Clinical Nurse Educator elevates the standard of professional nursing practice at UCM by developing, coaching and mentoring staff to become expert clinicians and leaders.

 

In this role, the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) will be responsible for providing adult and pediatric focused patient education addressing all related diabetes concepts and skills, including insulin pump therapy. The CNE will collaborate with other nursing services, endocrinology services, nutritional services and other healthcare professionals in the provision of services to patients and also educational and skills training for nurses and healthcare professionals.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assesses the education needs of pediatric and adult patients with diabetes and their families/support network and provides educational support:

    • Utilizes standardized and develops customized teaching tools and methodologies to measure patient and family/support network knowledge and skill in diabetes concepts and skills, including insulin pump therapy.

    • Provides comprehensive teaching in all aspects of diabetes management, including insulin training, meter and/or glucose sensor training.

    • Communicates effectively and organizes daily activities between consult services to support patient's discharge needs or other inpatient or outpatient needs.
  • Assesses the education needs of employees within area of responsibility:

    • Utilizes standardized and develops customized assessment tools and testing methodologies to measure staff knowledge and skill in core nursing practices and within specialty areas.

    • Collects data regarding employee learning needs, at least annually, through the methods of observation, interviewing, focus groups and instrumentation.

    • Interprets the hospital's strategic imperatives, policies, guidelines, and other internal demands in order to design education that supports these strategic goals and key objectives:

  • Plans and designs a variety of educational activities based on the needs assessment.

    • Collaborates with key staff to develop a comprehensive annual educational calendar.

    • Designs core nursing competencies that cross the continuum of clinical expertise and practice, using essential criteria such as: clinical judgment, advocacy/moral agency, caring practices, facilitation of learning, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity, clinical inquiry, and contemporary standards of practice and care.

  • Implements education activities:

    • Fosters a cultural environment that promotes learning.

    • Conducts a variety of learning events, based on needs assessment findings, using a variety of teaching-learning strategies.

  • Evaluates education and training activities:

    • Utilizes appropriate tools and testing methodology for assessing changes in learners' knowledge, skills, and clinical practice as well as for determining education project/program effectiveness.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • BSN required
  • Current RN Illinois license
  • Minimum requirement of three years of relevant clinical practice
  • Knowledge of pediatric and adult diabetes concepts and skills in all aspects of diabetes management, including insulin pump therapy
  • Ability to work with children, adults, and families of various ages and various backgrounds –  including socioeconomic, cultural, education, and literacy aspects
  • Knowledge and previous application of patient education/learning principles
  • Knowledge and previous application of adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated leadership skills evidenced by serving as a charge nurse, preceptor or episodic teacher
  • Demonstrates complex decision-making skills and problem solving ability
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, excel, Power point.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) strongly preferred; required to achieve within 18 months if not currently CNE
  • Master of Science in Nursing or related education field preferred
  • Previous experience in a role as an educator preferred
  • Previous experience working within multidisciplinary teams or nursing leadership committees preferred

 Position Details

  • Job Type/FTE: Full-Time (1.0 FTE)
  • Shift: Day, 8:00am-4:30pm and 1 weekend per month
