Summary of Job Duties: The Pharmacy Specialist works under minimal supervision. A clinical pharmacy specialist provides expertise to the department not routinely available from the pharmacy staff. The abilities of this individual may include a broad background in pharmaceutical care, specifically in investigational drugs pharmacy practice, with knowledge applicable to both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. The clinical pharmacy specialist participates as part of the research team coordinating the drug accountability requirements per study. Also provides support in development of research concepts for grant proposals and FDA IND submissions.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a clinical pharmacy residency (PGY1) OR Five (5) years of experience in direct patient care in an inpatient or outpatient clinical practice setting

  • Licensed pharmacist in State of Arkansas or eligible for licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PGY2 residency training AND 2 years of proven experience in direct patient care in an inpatient or ambulatory clinical practice setting.

  • Board certifications (such as BCOP or BCSCP) is preferred.

  • CCRP or ACRP certification is preferred and/or expected within 3 years of working in this clinical pharmacy specialist position.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing)

  • Provide drug data information sheets to hospital personnel (where appropriate).

  • Provide randomization, blinding, and related activities as needed, per study to investigators.

  • Train study personnel in the appropriate recordkeeping, and dispensing of investigational product outside the Pharmacy.

  • Ability to provide formal education programs relating to investigational drug research.

  • Prepares and compounds extemporaneous products, as needed per IRB approved drug study.

  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of pharmacy including the Pharmacy Practice Act

  • Knowledge of state and federal drug laws and guidelines

  • Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, clinical pharmacy services, and ambulatory care pharmacy operations

  • Knowledge of computer systems, utilized clinical care and research study management

  • Review new investigational protocols or grant proposals and develop budget for project as well as implementation plan.

  • Facilitate preparations of all investigational products and insure that the investigational products are labeled appropriately

  • Develop staff training programs regarding investigational agent procedures

  • Meet with study monitors and attend study start up meetings.

  • Ability to precept and teach pharmacy students and pharmacy residents (PGY-1 or PGY-2)

  • Assess procedures for management and dispensing of investigational agent per study when errors occur or new protocol amendment or new version of study pharmacy manual is received.

  • Establish and maintain standards, which assure the quality, proper storage and safe use of all investigational agents and related supplies.

  • Attendance at clinic and/or pharmacy department meetings

  • Attendance at assigned research related meetings (ex. Cancer Institute PRMC, IRB, or study specific meeting)

  • Maintain a billing system for the investigational products per study

  • Coordinate adverse drug reaction reporting as necessary.

  • Develop auditing processes, to insure research pharmacy operations are compliant with FDA IND regulations, GCP standards, CMS research billing standards, and Joint Commission

  • Act as a liaison between the Investigational Review Board, P&T Committee, Office of Research Compliance, and Pharmacy and Therapeutics service line

  • Supervise supportive personnel.

  • Maintains knowledge of the hospital pharmacy through continuing education

  • Maintains knowledge of existing and new legislation, laws, regulations, and advises management on needed actions

  • Seeks opportunities to grow professionally through opportunities for advancement, i.e. certifications, etc.

  • Assists/leads departmental projects to attain departmental goals or optimize workflow.

  • Fulfills lead pharmacist duties as assigned
