Summary of Job Duties: The Financial Counseling Specialist duties are to evaluate financial coverage for patients being considered for solid organ transplant, including the pre-op and post-op period. The Financial Counseling Specialist will verify insurance benefits, including pharmacy, and obtain pre-authorization for services from third party payers. The Financial Counseling Specialist will also educate patients/family members, and/or care givers in a clinic setting and /or an inpatient setting on the financial requirements of transplant. Exceptional communication, interpersonal skills and vast knowledge of solid organ transplant insurance contracts and benefits, including pharmacy, are required to effectively interact with the patient, family members, and/or caregivers.
Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in health care/ related field plus two (2) years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle or revenue cycle related function or a high school diploma and combination of education plus 6 (six) years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle or revenue cycle related function


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Performs thorough financial screening of eligible patient transplant referrals using tools developed by the Transplant Financial Coordinators.

  • Researches, verifies, and documents patient insurance coverage and patient financial information.

  • Meets with the potential solid organ transplant candidate, their families, and/or caregivers in an outpatient or inpatient setting to review the financial aspects of transplant. This will include reviewing the recipient's insurance coverage, including hospital, professional and pharmacy coverage (not limited to immune-suppressants), and other anticipated high costs of post-transplant care.

  • Insures authorizations and referrals required are obtained prior to services rendered.

  • Serves as a resource for patients, family members and/or caregivers on financial matters and assists them with questions concerning insurance and other financial issues both before and after transplant.
