Summary of Job Duties: The Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an integral member of the surgical team, providing high-quality, patient-centered care across the continuum of acute general surgical services. The APP collaborates with surgeons, residents, nurses, and the interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including initial evaluation, daily management, discharge planning, and post-discharge follow-up in clinic.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications APRN:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing

  • Three (3) years of nursing experience

  • Acute Care Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in Arkansas

  • APRN License

Minimum Qualifications PA: 

  • Masters Education

  • PA Licensure


Additional Information:

Key Responsibilities

Inpatient Care

  • Participate in daily surgical rounds to assess patient status, progress, and care plans.

  • Provide ongoing management of patients with acute general surgical conditions, including trauma consults as directed.

  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies, laboratory results, and imaging.

  • Perform procedures within scope of practice (e.g., wound care, drain management, bedside procedures).

  • Document assessments, progress notes, orders, and care plans in the EMR.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care with nursing, case management, social work, and ancillary services.

Discharge Planning & Transitions of Care

  • Develop and implement discharge plans, ensuring safe and timely transition to home or post-acute care.

  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, wound/drain care, medications, and follow-up instructions.

  • Complete discharge summaries and communicate with primary care providers or referring physicians as appropriate.

Ambulatory/Clinic Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre- and post-operative visits in the outpatient clinic setting.

  • Evaluate new and established patients presenting with acute or chronic surgical issues.

  • Manage wound and drain care, suture/staple removal, and other minor procedures.

  • Coordinate surgical scheduling and follow-up care with attending surgeons.

  • Participate in patient education, shared decision-making, and ongoing care coordination.

Professional Practice & Team Contribution

  • Function as a first-line resource for patients, families, and staff regarding EGS patient care.

  • Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical guidelines.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and professional development.

  • Provide education, mentorship, and collaboration with residents, students, and nursing staff.

  • Adhere to hospital policies, regulatory standards, and scope of practice laws.
