Position:  Transportation Routing Technician

Position FTE:  1.0

Pay Grade:  10

Starting Wage:  $18.88 + $2.00/hour CDL Premium

Days Per Year:  260

Job Summary: 
Performs a variety of administrative support functions to facilitate the daily transportation of students to and from school.  Designs bus routings and schedules, coordinates transportation activities between schools and the contract, and processes parent/contract/principal requests for changes and complaints.

Distinguishing Characteristics:   Must have excellent public relations skills and customer service, ability to work with professional staff, knowledge of the community, skills to support students in the workplace, knowledge of outside community support agencies, and experience with high school age students.
  Duty No. Essential Duties Frequency Band/Grade 1 Provides customer support for the Pupil Transportation Department to teachers, principals, administrative staff, parents, and the public.  Determines nature of concern/question and responds to inquires which do not require the Supervisor attention. Daily A1/B2 2 Greets visitors, answers telephones, provides information, transfers calls and/or takes messages.  Mediates issues or concerns as appropriate and or refers to other party for resolution. Daily A1/B2 3 Provides general professional communication and clerical support.  Including typing letters, memoranda and reports, receiving and distributing mail, copying and maintaining/updating appropriate record keeping systems. Daily B2 4 Designs bus routing for all schools which provides daily transportation while in session.  Coordinates and implements the daily bus schedule with the service contractor and schools.  Daily B3 5 Audits routes for ridership and timing on an annual basis.  Modifies or changes bus routes as necessary to maintain proper student loads, comply with state regulation, school board policy and maintain safe and efficient routing. As Needed B2 6 Prepares a variety of reports and supporting documentation including those required by the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. As Needed B2 7 Addresses concerns from stakeholders regarding the transportation of students to include bus accidents, unsafe stop or routes, student misbehavior, contract compliance or directs to appropriate personnel in accordance with established policies and procedures. Daily B3 8 Monitors daily operations and provides assistance/direction as necessary to ensure the safe transportation of students and the proper enforcement of District policies and procedures.  Coordinates services between contractor and school related to additional transportation needs, student changes, route changes or programmatic changes. As Needed B2/B3 9 Communicates road maintenance needs with the Alaska State Department of Transportation, Borough and City road maintenance departments. As Needed A1 10 Evaluates unsafe routing concerns and recommends corrections and routing adjustments. (e.g. bus stops, warning signs and route designs). As Needed B3 11 Assists with the school closure process and when directed coordinates with the student transportation contractor in recommending school closures due to inclement weather or other reason impacting transportation.  As Needed B3 12 Required to perform additional Transportation related tasks as delegated by the Transportation Supervisor or an assigned designee. As Needed B3      
Knowledge:   Thorough knowledge of Borough road systems and computer/keyboard operations.
 
Skills (position requirements at entry):   

  • Looking for a positive person who is self-motivated and thrives in a busy office setting.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Power Point, and other database experience.  
  • Must be comfortable learning new computer applications and processes.
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and enjoys logistics.
  • Answers the phone, provides customer service, takes messages and redirects calls to the appropriate offices.
  • Organizes and maintains files and records.
  • Collaborates and creates updated documents and spreadsheets.
  • Operates office equipment, such as photocopier, printer, label maker, shredder, etc.
  • Has good working knowledge of the road systems in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

 
Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):  Preferred; previous education, training, work or life experience which provides reasonable evidence of the successful completion of the various tasks listed.  Such experience may be evidenced by a minimum of four (4) years of subsequent transportation and routing experience. Thorough knowledge of Borough road systems and computer/keyboard operations.
 
Licensing Requirements (preferred at entry) A Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and school bus endorsement is preferred. 
 
Physical Requirements:  Sedentary Work:  Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
