Summary:
Tetra Tech, Inc. is seeking a senior level Geoscientist/Geologist experienced in project management, geotechnical evaluations, groundwater and mine pool monitoring, environmental assessments, proposal preparation, job and budget tracking, technical report preparation, and client development for mining, abandoned mine reclamation, mine drainage treatment, and other environmental projects. This position may also support business development/marketing services these types of projects in the Mid-Continent region. The successful candidate may manage or work on a variety of mining, AML, AMD, or other environmental projects.
This position will provide technical expertise, project planning and development, mentoring, and marketing services primarily in support of mining, abandoned mine reclamation, and/or mine drainage treatment/abatement projects. Experience with water sampling and evaluation related to stream assessments; AMD discharge characterization; passive treatment system selection, sizing and design; AMD treatment system/plant performance; and watershed restoration is required. Experience with OSMRE's AMDTreat software is desirable.
An understanding of the geology of Appalachian and Mid-Continent coal seams and the associated mining techniques (both surface and underground) will be beneficial. Experience in mining, mine regulatory, or associated field or industry is a plus.
The work will primarily be located in the Appalachian and Mid-Continent Regions including Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio or other surrounding states. The candidate should have a fundamental understanding and working knowledge of national environmental rules and regulations related to mining. Knowledge of individual state mining and environmental rules is a plus.
Your Role:
The successful candidate will be expected to perform work activities and project management with minimal supervision and review of their work except for QA/QC reviews. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:
- Work with stakeholders; watershed groups; landowners; federal, state, and local government officials; and other Tetra Tech staff with diverse technical backgrounds to plan, develop or otherwise facilitate mine reclamation and AMD treatment/abatement projects and other projects with geologic, hydrogeologic, or geotechnical components.
- Oversee or perform routine field and office assignments (technical and non-technical) including planning, conducting, and reporting on field investigations involving abandoned mine (AML) sites, watershed assessments, active mine sites, well installations, soil and groundwater sampling, aquifer testing and hydrogeology.
- Oversee the evaluation and monitoring of underground mine pools.
- Support the preparation of project designs for AML and AMD projects including completing or supporting investigations, assessments, permit applications, geotechnical and engineering studies, design assistance, and construction-phase services.
- Support preparation of geotechnical and engineering reports, cost estimates, specifications, construction schedules, and designs in support of mining, abandoned mine reclamation, mine drainage treatment, or other environmental remediation projects.
- Mentor new and inexperienced staff in the areas of AMD sampling, characterization, monitoring, reporting, and treatment. Duties would include demonstration of best practices both in the office and also in the field.
- Project management of projects with geological and/or geotechnical components including mine drainage treatment/abatement, mining, abandoned mine reclamation, and other environmental projects.
- Oversight of projects and staff completing field activities including drill inspection and logging, sampling various environmental matrices and wastes, monitoring well installations, Phase I ESAs, data collection analysis and interpretation.
- Ability to interact with state and federal agencies personnel.
- Preparation of geological and geotechnical reports including maps, charts, boring logs, cross-sections depicting subsurface conditions.
- Operate computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite and necessary geologic or geotechnical software.
- Oversee and/or perform field testing using equipment and instrumentation.
- Prepare detailed reports including geological and geotechnical analysis for both internal use and for external clients.
- Review and or prepare field reports, internal correspondence, sections of final reports, and regulatory reporting.
- Oversee subcontractors and / or other company employees in the field.
- Prepare health and safety plans / job hazard analyses and follow company / site safety standards.
- Contact vendors for product information and/or quotes.
- Research technical papers/literature and regulatory requirements as necessary.
Additional responsibilities may include:
· Overseeing, conducting, and/or reviewing sample collection and data using various sampling methods including hand auger, bailers, pumps and low flow sampling techniques.
· Ensuring adequate maintenance and calibration of field equipment and instruments.
· Reviewing work of field staff to ensure accurate documentation of field conditions, field measurements, sample custody, compliance with client safety requirements including donning client specified personal protective equipment and routine drug screening.
Qualifications:
- A BS degree in Geology with twenty or more years of experience is required.
- Registration as a Professional Geologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required.
- Registration in other states is a plus.
- MSHA Part 48 certification is beneficial but not required.
- Must have demonstrated ability in conducting or overseeing field data collection and analysis and demonstrated technical writing capability.
- Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations preferred. Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills are a must.
- Additional qualifications such as OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED training will be viewed favorably.
- A Pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations is required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
