We are seeking an experienced Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Adviser to contribute to the primary education sector in Lao.

The opportunity

  • Hybrid position with some in-country inputs (domestic and international travel required)
  • One year contract as a short term adviser
  • Opportunity to improve the education system in Lao PDR

BEQUAL

BEQUAL, the Australian Government's flagship development program in the Lao PDR, supports education priorities of the Government of Laos (GoL) described in the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) Education Sector Development Plan and is aligned with the strategic directions of Australia's International Development Policy. BEQUAL supports MoES with the primary curriculum reform, with a particular focus on primary curriculum development, teacher professional development and integration of inclusive education principles. BEQUAL Phase 2 will continue the substantial progress and build on the achievements of Phase 1.

BEQUAL Phase 2 has a strong focus on contributing to the development of an enabling teaching and learning environment for teachers and learners who may be disadvantaged because of gender, disability, ethnicity or language.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strategic advice to the BEQUAL management team to ensure BEQUAL programming reflects the core principals and priorities of DFAT's new Gender Equality Strategy and Disability Inclusion Strategy
  • Review the GEDSI implementation plan prepared by DFAT and BEQUAL consultants
  • Based on the revised GE&IE Strategy, design and implement a social norms study in collaboration with the GE&IE Manager
  • Provide professional development support to the GE&IE Manager

Selection criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in Gender Studies, Social Inclusion, Disability Inclusion, International Development, or a related field are essential
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of Gender and Social Inclusion related policies and programs in Southeast Asia is essential.
  • Experience designing and conducting gender and social inclusion analyses, as well as integrating and implementing findings into program designs and annual plans
  • Experience engaging local stakeholders, including CSOs, and other local and national government officials in gender and social inclusion initiatives
  • Experience of working in a GEDSI adviser role in the education sector
  • Experience in supporting inclusion for people with disabilities in developing country context
