Your Role:

Tetra Tech, Inc. is currently seeking an Environmental Scientist Intern for our Kansas City, MO operations to support environmental investigations at former lead mining areas and lead smelters in southeast Kansas, particularly near Pittsburg and Weir, Kansas.  Job responsibilities will include obtaining access to residential properties for soil sampling, conducting soil sampling at properties where access is obtained, and overseeing excavation of contaminated soil at properties that qualify for site remediation.  This position will require extensive outdoor work during all seasons. Other responsibilities may include preparation of sampling plans, interpretation of sample data and preparation of data summary reports, regular maintenance and calibration of equipment used during field studies, and supporting other environmental studies.  

In this position you will be part of a project team and gain valuable data collection experience in the field, as well as experience in preparing detailed analysis of field data and project reports.  Tetra Tech provides mentoring and training opportunities to help junior staff hone their areas of expertise and diversify their interests.  

In addition:

  • This position requires you to drive on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required. 
  • This position also requires passing a criminal background check.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

 Candidates should have 0 to 1 years of experience and be able to work at least 16 hours per week (additional hours can be worked depending on availability).  Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, and should also live in or near Cherokee County, Kansas (most work will occur in Weir, Kansas).  Desired skills in the ideal candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Must possess strong analytical, organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Must be highly motivated, customer focused and work well in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel preferred.

 

Education and Certifications:

Ideal candidates should be working towards a degree in environmental science, geology, biology, environmental engineering, and/or geographic information systems (GIS).  Candidates seeking other natural science or engineering degrees are also acceptable.  

 

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift sample coolers and other equipment up to 50 pounds.  Candidates must be able to wear a full-face respirator and complete annual medical monitoring program, including pulmonary function testing.

 

Work Environment:

This position will require extensive outdoor work.  Opportunities for limited travel within the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska may also be available based on the candidate's ability to travel.  Outdoor work may occur during all seasons, including peak summer and winter conditions.
