Nauru Education Program

The Nauru Education Program (NEP) is administered by Tetra Tech International Development on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The NEP aims to strengthen Nauru education sector performance and Australia's Pacific relationships, driving shared prosperity and progress. The NEP has a focus on stronger literacy and numeracy outcomes; more equitable and relevant education pathways; and more inclusive, evidence-based, and efficient government systems.

The NEP program is tailored to the local cultural context and government priorities, through Nauru's Department of Education and Training (DoET) and other stakeholders, including teachers, school and community leaders and parents. The program will employ unique approaches to effectively address local challenges with a resource constrained environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide or coordinate quality education policy advice, considering what is relevant and applicable to Nauru, on all education matters
  • Support the development and implementation of annual operational plans to ensure the timely achievement of service targets and education sector goals
  • Coordinate and prepare the Department's annual budget, as well as relevant donor funding allocations, in consultation and collaboration with the Minister, departmental staff and the Ministry of Finance
  • Coordinate with the Chief Secretary's Department on all human resource matters including the recruitment, termination or discipline of employees
  • Assist with the sourcing and coordination of donor technical assistance, funding and aid programs for the Department of Education

Selection criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in Education Service Management or other relevant field
  • High level experience and a record of success in Education Service Management, (preferably with a focus on planning, financial management and/or program design)
  • Experience working at a high level of government and able to demonstrate an ability to work closely in a politically sensitive environment
  • Previous experience living and working in a cross-cultural environment, preferably in the Pacific and in Nauru
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and coordinating basic education programs and strengthening core education system capabilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the education sector and oversight institutions within a government context, for instance, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance
