Overview

We are looking for an Infectious Disease physician to assume a system-wide leadership position as hospital epidemiologist at Tampa General Hospital and University of South Florida. Tampa General Hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and the major academic medical center in the Tampa Bay Area https://www.tgh.org/. Tampa General is also the main safety net hospital for the region.

The job will be based at Tampa General Hospital with an academic appointment in the Infectious Disease Division at University of South Florida. This is a full-time job that will involve close collaboration with the TGH quality, infection prevention, clinical microbiology laboratory, and antibiotic stewardship teams. Up to 25% time can be devoted to clinical, educational, or research activities, depending upon the academic interests of the candidate. The hospital epidemiologist will work closely with the academic faculty of the USF Division of Infectious Disease who have robust clinical and research activities in HIV care, prevention of hospital acquired infections, global health, and public health.

Job Summary

Serving as a Medical Director and with the support of the Infection Prevention department, responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and managing the spread of infectious diseases within the hospital, the Hospital Epidemiologist plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and healthy hospital environment relative to infectious diseases. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee development of consistent standard operating procedure and management strategies for hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
  • Routinely conducts surveillance of the environment and reports on potential hazards related to infection prevention.
  • Conducts education as needed for physicians, staff, volunteers, and patients related to prevention of the spread of infection.
  • Consult and advise Team Member Health about exposures and vaccinations.
  • Coordinate with Antimicrobial Stewardship Team for efforts in best practices for use of antimicrobials and prevention of emergence of resistant organisms.
  • Interface with surgical services about wound infections, relevant complications.
  • Work with sepsis task force for sepsis treatment and prevention initiatives or research.
  • With IP and quality teams, educate staff on implementing best practices and quality improvement measures.
  • Advise Vascular Access team, Environmental Services, Facilities, Sterile Processing and Disinfection, procedural areas on best practices for infection prevention.
  • Membership/sponsorship on quality workgroups for infection prevention as needed.
  • Oversight of mitigation policies for infection prevention
Requirements
  • Doctorate Degree, with a focus on Infectious Diseases.
  • Licensed Medical Doctor, MD.
  • Board-certified Infectious Disease Physician.
  • Prior leadership experience, minimum 1 year.
