Are you looking for an opportunity to use your background in business or even corporate background to improve both local and state government? Do you want to assist Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state? The Vermont Department of Taxes seeks an organized, customer-friendly, individual to work in our corporate and business income tax section reviewing returns and assisting taxpayers and businesses with questions via phone and email. This full-time position is responsible for assisting with processing returns, correcting return errors and answering taxpayer questions. The incumbent will be involved in the informal review and settlement of corporate and pass-through entity appeals. They may also be asked to help with special projects and to provide assistance with maintaining efficient workflow processes. Work will involve tax research and generating written communications with CPA's, financial accounting representatives, and lawyers representing taxpayers of both small and large businesses. These communications may include investigating the facts and case law surrounding an assessment and developing the Department's position in collaboration with our Legal Unit. Training is available if you have a good understanding of how businesses and corporations' financials work.


Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing support to taxpayers through phone, emails and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting errors or requesting additional information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience with business financial record keeping.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and corporate taxation.
  • Knowledge of structure and taxation of pass-through entities, i.e., S-Corporations, Partnerships, and LLCs
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

 

Additional qualifications could include:

  • Experience with unitary determinations,
  • Experience with corporate and pass-through income taxation at state and federal levels,
  • Experience with multi-state apportionment.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. Stressful situations and strong differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives may occur. Some travel for work may be required. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) AND two (2) years or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

 

OR

 

Bachelor's degree or higher AND one (1) year or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree with courses in accounting, finance, business administration, taxation AND three (3) years or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

 

OR

 

Two (2) year or more of experience as a Tax Examiner III.

Special Requirements

Background Checks: This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.
