Overview

The role of a VR Senior Counselor/Motivational Interviewing Coach is to provide counseling and casework at an advanced professional level; develop and maintain on-going counseling relationships with VR participants; assist, advise and guide participants in developing IPE's; arrange for and have basic knowledge of medical evaluation and treatment; provide financial supports to participant in order to help them achieve vocational goals; manage spending in accordance with budgetary restrictions/caps; assess aptitudes, abilities and experience as it relates to achieving employment outcomes; have knowledge of local partners and public services/resources; collaborate and develop plans with providers as needed; have basic computer efficiency; maintain case records and complete required paperwork in a timely fashion; attend and participate in district, regional and state-wide meetings; assist in maintaining an organized, welcoming environment for participants and partners; and participate in local office strategic planning and team improvement activities.

 

In addition to the regular job duties of a VR Counselor, the VR Senior Counselor:

  • Plans and facilitates monthly MI Coaching Circles within one district, providing coaching and training for new staff,
  • Contributes to the onboarding of new staff,
  • Provides ongoing training information available for staff,
  • Acts as a MI resource for staff,
  • Participates in a statewide MI Coaching group, and participates in professional develop training identified as a need for MI coaches.  

 

Applicants will need to have a Master's degree in Vocational Counseling and have worked as a vocational counselor for at least one year to be eligible for this position.

As of July 14, 2024, the step 1 rate for pay grade 25 will be $29.87 per hour.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed both within a standard office setting and will involve work with VR counselors in other field offices, particularly in VR specialized programs. Travel will be required, for which private means of transportation must be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required. Interaction with consumer advocates and special educators may require diplomatic skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, social work, special education or counseling, education with a special education focus, or a related counseling field AND one (1) or more years or more experience at a professional level in the provision of vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities, including or supplemented by one (1) or more years of leadership experience.

Special Requirements

Candidates without a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling will be expected to demonstrate successful completion of the following graduate level coursework:
1.    Medical or Psychosocial Aspects of Disabilities
2.    Vocational Counseling
3.    Vocational Assessment and Evaluation
4.    Job Placement or Occupational Information

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
