Overview

The Vermont Department of Health Laboratory performs testing to monitor Vermont's population and environment for threats to public health in a state of the art facility. Our mission is to be the most innovative, quality-focused, customer-oriented Public Health Laboratory in the United States. When there is a threat, such as a novel strain of disease, a natural disaster, a chemical spill or a foodborne outbreak, the laboratory is prepared to respond.

 

The Vermont Department of Health Laboratory is seeking an individual to perform technical laboratory support duties for the microbiology and chemistry test areas, prepare specimens for analysis, and perform water bacteriological analysis.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS:  Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.  In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Environmental Factors

Must be able to work in laboratory conditions with exposure to noxious or harmful fumes, chemicals and blood borne or other infectious pathogens. Manual dexterity and good vision are required for certain tests and to use equipment. The ability to lift moderate weight is required. Rabies vaccination may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years or more of full-time college coursework or an associate's degree or higher in a physical, biological science or laboratory science AND one (1) year or more in a medical setting OR environmental, clinical, or food testing laboratory experience.

OR

Two (2) years or more in a medical setting OR environmental, clinical, or food testing laboratory experience.

OR

One (1) year or more of experience as a Public Health Laboratory Technician I.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science with experience in a laboratory or medical setting
