Overview

The State of Vermont, Agency of Digital Services (ADS) is seeking an individual looking to use their training and experience in Azure and VM server development and management as a Systems Administrator. this position will be supporting multiple Agencies and Departments as they provide services to the State's citizens and visitors.  In addition to great benefits and opportunities for a partial remote working environment and flexible scheduling, working for the State allows employees the opportunity for regular cross-team collaboration with other technology professionals, exposure to a diverse range of solutions, projects and an environment that encourages training and career advancement.


Candidates for this position should be interested in working directly with business partners to apply technical continuous improvement skills in an effort to create opportunities for modernizing or streamlining processes.  This position will work closely with other ADS teams, vendors, and leadership to appropriately design and implement technology with a strong eye towards cost efficiency and security of the state's data.  A successful candidate should be self-motivated, be capable of documenting technical designs and reference materials, capable of training business partners and co-workers as necessary, and can enjoy being creative around solving problems.

 

As of July 14, 2024 the step 1 rate for pay grade 26 will be $31.76 per hour.

Responsibilities for this position include:
  • Installation, upgrade, and maintenance of VM and Azure based servers, Azure apps and middleware, installing new software releases and system upgrades, evaluating, and installing patches, and conducting database migrations, refreshes, and restores. 
  • Perform setup and installation of applications and database instances in virtual or cloud environments, administer systems and services, and monitor for quality control throughout development phases of new projects.   
  • Assist with gap analysis of systems, create system design documentation for production systems and services in maintainable and reusable formats, understand requirements documentation.
  • Assist with moving solutions onto the State's Cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, etc.) to meet business partner and ADS missions.
  • Review and ensure proposed applications are compatible with State and business partner infrastructure, participate as technical lead on Requests for Information (RFI), Request for Proposals (RFP), Contract development, RFP scoring, and vendor proposal change reviews.
  • Participate in Change Management, reviewing proposed changes submitted to State's IT Change Advisory Board and providing guidance as they might apply to business partner systems and solutions, enforce, and comply with approved changes.
  • Work with the other ADS staff on committees and teams on standardizing policy or procedural development. 
  • Monitor and respond to business partner security and system monitoring solutions (such as Tenable, Splunk, or Tanium) for servers and cloud systems.
  • Work with IT Specialists for desktop and device management.  
  • Assist on networking issues and technical design changes. 
  • Coordinate with and monitor vendor technical staff to ensure compliance with state technology design and contractual obligations. 
  • Assist with associated development and application issue resolution. 

 

Preference will be given to applicants with training or experience in:

  • Managing and monitoring systems and data in cloud environments
  • Cloud computing security and networking 
  • SQL cloud-based database design and support

 

A fingerprint supported background check will be required based on assigned job duties and location.


The Agency of Digital Services supports a hybrid work environment. While regular (weekly) on site work should be expected, a mixed telework/onsite schedule is encouraged.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a standard office setting, but some travel may be required for which private means of transportation should be available. Some maintenance work on assigned equipment may be necessary and some work outside of regular work schedule may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science AND two (2) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree in computer science or college-level coursework that includes 15 computer science credits AND four (4) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.

 

OR

 

Six (6) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.
