Overview

The Agency Facilities Engineering Section of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is seeking a highly motivated individual who is interested in joining a small team of engineers and environmental technicians tasked with designing infrastructure improvements at Agency of Natural Resources-owned properties. Agency Facilities is a unique group within DEC tasked with project development, full design and construction bidding/oversight for projects at a wide variety of sites throughout the state. Civil Engineering project types include drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, shoreland stabilization, flood resiliency, Agency-owned dam repair, boating access area rehabilitation, fish hatchery facility upgrades, and wildlife management area upgrades. In addition to the design focus of our work, exposure to all facets of the State's environmental and land use programs is inherent to the job, creating a comprehensive learning opportunity for a person in the early stages of a career.

 

Our prime clients are all within the Agency of Natural Resources- Dept. of Forests, Parks and Recreation, the Fish & Wildlife Dept., and other Dept. of Environmental Conservation programs seeking technical assistance. 

 

It is expected that we would match the successful applicant's skills to the needs of our project teams. Important attributes we are looking for in applicants applying for this position are: Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work effectively within our small team and with our client/partners; technical writing proficiency; enthusiasm to learn new skills. Working knowledge on the use of ArcGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD or similar software, and/or experience with topographic surveys would be of great benefit to our Section. This position will involve both in-office and field-based work.

Who May Apply

This position, Environmental Technician III - Water Investment Division - Temporary (Job Requisition #53082), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both a standard office setting and in the field, for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Heavy lifting and climbing may be required. Some work outside of regular work schedule may be necessary. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or a natural resources field AND two (2) years or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

High School diploma or equivalent AND four (4) years or more of experience at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources.

 

OR

 

One (1) year or more as an Environmental Technician II.
