Position Summary:
The Buyer/Planner is responsible for developing and implementing strategic planning and procurement initiatives, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring the timely and cost effective acquisition of materials and services necessary for manufacturing operations. This role plays a key part in achieving consistent scheduling, cost reduction, quality improvements, and maintaining supply chain continuity to support the production goals and customer satisfaction.
What You Will Do:
Procurement & Planning:
- Purchase, plan, and expedite commodities needed for manufacturing processes, ensuring on-time delivery and optimal inventory levels
- Utilize ERP systems to analyze material requirements, generate purchase orders, and track order status
- Collaborate with production, scheduling, engineering, and sales departments to align material procurement with production schedules and customer demands
- Maintain control over purchase orders, revisions, and documentation tracking
Vendor Management & Negotiation:
- Qualify, evaluate, and develop relationships with current and potential suppliers (domestic and foreign)
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms based on volume, quality, delivery performance, and total value
- Develop and maintain supplier performance metrics, conduct supplier audits, and address deficiencies through improvement plans
- Lead supplier qualification processes, including site visits and audits with QA and Engineering support
Cost Control & Market Analysis:
- Monitor market conditions and supplier performance to identify opportunities for cost savings and lead time improvements
- Contribute to developing standard costs for products by continually reviewing pricing trends and market data
- Develop contingency sourcing strategies to mitigate supply disruptions
Continuous Improvement & Compliance:
- Support initiatives such as open book management and promote a culture of continuous improvement
- Ensure procurement activities comply with safety standards, OSHA regulations, and company policies
- Participate in trade shows, industry expos, and professional development activities to stay informed of market trends and new sourcing opportunities
Reporting & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of supplier information, RFQs, and procurement activities
- Generate and review reports related to inventory, supplier performance, and procurement KPIs
- Assist in inventory counts and participate in periodic audits
Additional Responsibilities:
- Support quality assurance and engineering teams during new product introductions and supplier qualification
- Assist in developing packaging, shipping, and handling requirements to ensure safety and efficiency
- Travel as needed for supplier visits, trade shows, and industry conferences
- Promote a positive and collaborative work environment aligned with company values
Minimum Qualifications Preferred:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of purchasing or supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proficiency in ERP systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Strong negotiation, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical data, SDS sheets, and supplier documentation
- Willingness to travel as needed
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Logistics, or related field
- Certifications such as APICS, CPM, or similar
- 10+ years of supply chain or procurement experience
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, especially related to engine components or similar industries
