Required Qualifications:
- Reports to SPA HQ, Alexandria, VA, up to full-time, based upon the needs of the client.
- Active SECRET or higher DoD security clearance.
- 3+ years of experience as a System Safety Engineer with strong communication skills and experience briefing senior leadership on projects, system concepts, or design decisions.
- Proven ability to prioritize and execute workload to meet requirements and deadlines and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment conducting analysis with uncertainties or incomplete data.
- Capable of breaking down complex issues into simplified problem statements and laying out objective approaches to identify and compare the merits of competing solutions.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field, or Master's Degree in a related field.
- Experience in any of the following: nuclear weapons safety, Navy weapons safety, explosives safety, flight testing safety, technical review panels, safety data packages, multi-discipline working groups, model-based systems engineering.
- Active DoD TOP SECRET security clearance.
Responsibilities
The Safety Engineer will support Navy SSP in providing vision, direction, and oversight of safety planning in support of SSP's Command Safety Program. They will contribute with minimal oversight to safety working groups supporting the program, system-level safety efforts like system hazard analyses, and development of model-based safety. They will coordinate with the contractor government safety team to address safety hazards and environmental impacts, identifying and documenting all potential hazards, related mishaps, and associated risk information specific to strategic weapons systems. The disciplines covered include discrepancy reporting, training and certification, documentation change control, configuration control, material review systems, corrective action systems, and process proofing. In addition, the Engineer will identify safety areas of responsibility pertinent to support the weapon system. Areas of responsibility include (but are not limited to): nuclear weapons surety, weapons systems safety, explosive safety, environmental and asset safety, transportation and logistics safety, fire prevention, lightning protection and grounding, as well as occupational safety and health, and hazardous material (HAZMAT) safety, hazard analytics, model-based systems engineering.
