Position Overview:

The successful candidate will bemanaging all mechanical operations on a day-to-day basis, including inspection, maintenance, and repair of freight and tank cars. The goal of the position is to ensure the on-time performance of trains and delivery of rolling stock to meet Customer requirements at the Savage Gulf Rail Facility in Gregory, TX.   

Here is what you will be doing

  • Oversight and leadership of all railcar repair/maintenance activities for the site
  • Active involvement in railcar repair activities
  • Control of inventory and accurate billing of Customers based on use of parts and consumables
  • Oversight of potential contractors used for difficult to perform or environmentally sensitive railcar repair work
  • Upkeep of AAR and FRA compliance and Quality Assurance program for railcar repair
  • Occasional facility oversight during non-regular business hours
  • Safety and Training leadership – ensuring all training for repair and inspection Team Members are up to date; managing a safe workplace where Team Members do not perform work for which they are not qualified
  • Maintaining OSHA compliance
  • Safety and Health Leadership to ensure hazardous or compromising shipments in railcars are appropriately handled

Safety Orientation 

  • Build safety and improve safety results using SHAPS (Savage Hazard Analysis Process) and QAP (Quality Assurance Process) programs
  • Ensure processes and Team Members are in place to audit and ensure compliance requirements meeting (Association of American Railroads (AAR) inspections, qualifications, re-certification's and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) policies and procedures)

Problem Solving 

  • Responsible for managing billable activities and Team Members productivity
  • Review production and operations KPI's and resolve operations and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and operational delays
  • Maintain teamwork among Team Members, contractors, and internal clients by acting with a sense of urgency to respond to issues as they may arise
  • Actively communicate scheduling and priority of railcar repairs to Customers

Planning and Organizing 

  • Ensure the execution of mechanical activities in area of responsibility
  • Establish effective strategies and metrics to measure, control and improve rolling stock reliability and availability for internal and external customers safely
  • Ensure the timely processing of inbound and outbound car inspections

General Leadership 

  • Build and lead an effective, high performing team
  • Lead, plan, and manage the overall repair and maintenance of rolling stock equipment
  • Manage Team Members to ensure mechanical work performed is within Federal, AAR and Savage standards
  • Communicate company goals and policies to create clear understanding of direction and expectations

Requirements of a Successful Maintenance Manager 

  • Ability to work on varying shifts for the operations that run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays
  • Ability to work in potentially harsh weather conditions
  • Experience in Mechanical Repair and inspection environments
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in a railroad mechanical shop.   Comprehensive knowledge of car types, components and operation, inspection and repair, yard rules and regulatory requirements
  • Minimum 3 years' supervisory railroad experience or comparable
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure and in situations and circumstances and adapt to changing situations
  • Must display logistical and critical thinking, multi-tasking, problem solving, and decision making skills
  • Experience in AAR billing and job write-ups
