PRINCIPAL IMAGE SCIENCE ENGINEER

Immediate need for a Senior Image Scientist with image chain analysis experience. Candidate will serve as the dedicated SME overseeing factory acceptance testing (FAT) for a suite of electro-optical image processing algorithms as well as working to define appropriate product quality metrics to ensure accuracy and integrity of the image data and products delivered to users.

Major duties of the position include:
  • Review and assess test plans, use cases, and procedures against functional requirements
  • Ensure contractor compliance with general algorithm development and testing best practices
  • Attend, monitor and report on aspects of actual test execution
  • Participate in review of issues associated with anomalies and defects within processing algorithms
  • Assist in troubleshooting issues uncovered during testing, and stay actively involved as new versions are released to address discrepancy reports (DRs) uncovered
  • Support product evaluations, quality studies, new product initializations, and product algorithm assessments
  • Refine image quality equation to quantify the expected quality of a system given various parameters
  • Decompose product formation elements to quantify the overall quality of the image chain
  • Algorithm assessment to quantify the performance of a product given desired mission application
  • Perform baseline assessment of system performance to support sensor initialization
  • Monitor system performance over time
  • Respond to detected errors and artifacts by recommending possible causes and corrective actions
  • Communicate issues and solutions to the broader government and contract management structure as requested by leadership
  • Develop alternative courses of action, work-arounds, and fallback positions with a recommended course of action for each risk, and monitor and re-evaluate risks at appropriate milestones

Successful candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with:

  • Assessing the performance of an imaging system in terms of the interaction of various system components
  • Designing user experiments for the purpose of understanding system design impacts or identifying optimal parameter settings
  • Explaining complex imaging phenomena to government and corporate management
  • Applying image science and system engineering experience with sensor phenomenology, image formation processes, and development of operational/prototype processing algorithms
  • Reviewing and supporting the development and testing of new imagery products
  • Image chain analysis to include sensor modeling, signal quality and noise, optics, detector calibration, and image processing of pixel data
  • Application of error estimation
  • Application of proper design of experiments

Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Poly
  • Degree in Image Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related scientific or technical discipline or equivalent experience
  • Bachelors degree and nine (9) or more years of experience, Masters degree and seven (7) or more years of experience, PhD and four (4) or more years of experience
  • 8+ years of image science and systems engineering experience, with demonstrated proficiency performing image chain analysis
  • Working knowledge of satellite TCPED functions
  • Experience working with Electro-optical image platforms
  • Image processing and digital signal processing experience
  • Simulation and modeling experience
  • Working understanding and practical application of modeling components of the image path to include sensor, detector, atmospheric and material properties.
  • Understanding and application of image quality standards, scales, metrics and image quality equations
  • Significant applied knowledge of sensor imaging systems, products, and exploitation processes
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with emphasis on briefing to obtain decisions and solve technical issues and test plans/reports writing
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Good customer teaming skills; ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
  • Willingness to learn, solve problems and perform in a dynamic work environment

Desired Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Image Science, Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics or related scientific or technical discipline
  • Experience working in a DoD or IC operational environment
  • Knowledge of ground processing architectures and image processing algorithms for passive remote sensing systems
  • Experience defining, designing, developing and testing remote sensing systems and associated products
  • Experience developing engineering code to solve hard problems and create process for repeatable results
  • Familiarity utilizing multiple tool suites for development of engineering code such as Python, Matlab, ENVI, etc.
  • Familiarity with Common Cloud Services (C2S) utilized within the IC
  • Experience planning and executing sensor initializations
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, and ability to lead technical forums
