We have an exciting opportunity at our Portgordon Crisp Malt site for a Production Manager to join our team.

The Production Manager is responsible for leading the production team to ensure processes run efficiently, safely and malt quality standards are achieved.

Key Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the production operations.

  • Ensure organised task deployment of all production and relevant site activities, including monitoring, supporting, and checking of completeness to the standards required.

  • Ensure shift coverage to meet operational requirements.

  • Ensure that the Malt produced meets the defined specifications.

  • Report to the Maltings Manager of any issues identified and any changes made or required.

  • Minimise energy use across the production processes and site in general, where this will not affect product quantity.

  • Maximise production throughput according to the requirements and capabilities of the plant and advise the Malting Manager of improvement potentials.

  • Planning requirements, including Dispatch blending, Production, Bagging line and bagged malt transport.

  • Regular inspection of production areas and reporting of any non-conformities.

  • Ensure hygiene standards are being maintained.

  • Ensure documents are reviewed, updated, and trained out where relevant. This includes, but not limited to, Risk Assessments, SSoW, Cleaning schedules and production related forms.

  • Arrange team and individual training in accordance with business and individual needs.

  • Monitor daily inspections of production samples and that appropriate adjustments are made as a result.

  • Work with the maintenance team to optimise running potential of plant machinery to ensure efficient running.

  • Ensure that the Grain Handling and Material Flow systems are being maintained accurately.

  • Monitor and make process adjustments to ensure the quality of water discharged from the effluent plant meets set standards as permitted by the Environmental agency. 

  • Ensure staff adherence of Health and Safety systems and procedures at all times and take action to address non-conformities, including disciplinary action.

  • Ensure timely reporting of any hazards or accidents and follow up investigations or remedial actions take place.

  • Manage HR topics such as return to work interviews and disciplinary processes.

  • Weekend and weekly on call coverage.

  • Ensure that Health and Safety procedures are being followed and that incidents, near misses or opportunities for improvement are reported and actions followed up.

  • Ensure any potential quality impacts are reported, as well as opportunities for improvement.

  • Deputise for the Maltings Managers.

Qualifications, skills, and experience 

Essential

  • Experience in leading in Food Manufacturing

  • Strong communication skills to develop working relationships

  • Able to work within a fast-paced environment to ensure process timings and quality requirements consistently met

  • Have a flexible approach to working hours

Desirable

  • Malting leadership experience 

  • Leadership or Management qualification

  • Experience with managing maintenance engineers
